does anybody know if it is recommended to add fuel additive to unleaded petrol in my 1990 GtII? it has a weber conversion if this makes any difference?

No Volkswagen built after 1977 (ish) needs leaded petrol. It is the octane rating that the car needs and these were designed to run on 98 ron, so I would recommend using Tesco 99 ron or Shell V-Power, these have the higher octane rating than normal unleaded at 95 ron.
I am sure others will put comments on here as well, all valid and useful information.

yup, some are cheaperer than others
garages that don't shift much fuel are best avoided as the fuel "goes off" over time. i fill up at total - £30 gets you 2 weeks free comprehensive breakdown cover

I agree with Pete, my GTI stipulates 98 RON but 95 is usually just fine, the only time you'd need to step up to 98 is if your engine is pinking a lot.

I use 98RON in my Scirocco. It would probably be ok on 95RON but as I don't do epic mileages the cost over the year is unlikely to be significantly different.

I could not get my DX engine Mk1 Golf GTi to run well on 95 Ron petrol, lumply tick over and felt flat to drive I now use 97 Ron super unleaded from supermarkets and it so much better.

I've said this a few times, but higher octane is more economical to the point where it actually works out costing less overall compared to standard unleaded. There's no point putting standard in your car, especially if the timing is set for 98 plus RON. You'll lose both economy and power.

i always found standard duel gave me significantly more miles between trips to the pump. the full fat stuff always ended up making the car get driven much much much harder
irrelevant now, as i run a diesel

Don't use any additives but I do use 98 or 99-RON, and I do notice the difference between that and normal unleaded.
