Hi all, this may seem like a silly question but what direction should I be turning the mixture screw for a leaner mix? My knowledge of carbs is very limited lol

Why are you adjusting the mixture?
Once set they should not need any tweeking, it's best to get them hooked up to a CO meter to check what the mixture is before messing with the adjustment.
When tuning the engine there is lots of things the change/do before touching the mixture.
Spark plugs, HT leads, rotor arm, dissy cap, air filter and timing need to be good before touching the mixture as they will have an affect on the running.

Black spark plugs can happen if the car has just done short journeys and not had a good run.

To adjust the mixture you turn the screw in (clockwise) to weaken the mixture and screw it out the richer the mixture.

You only need to turn it a little to make a difference to the setting, mark/take note where it is now so you can go back to how it was if it all goes wrong.

On the air box there should be another hose going to the front of air intake, it opens/closes the flap to let the hot air in when the car is cold.

Yes you are missing a vacuum pipe to the warm air flap, resulting in a vacuum leak. I bet it idles rough except when it's hot?

Yes, hook this up to the side of your airbox

Thanks! It has been running rough when cold lol. Does it matter which of the two pins at the side connect to either the front or rear?

I'm not sure if it does make any difference which 1 it fits to but on my car the one at the front goes to the flap and the 1 at the back goes to the carb.

It's the same sort of vacuum hose used on the dissy etc. plastic tube with a rubber hose on the end.
