Hi All,

how do I get me rocco accurately valued, I had a lorry clip my passenger side last night, he has accepted responsibility and its being handled by my insurance, they referred me to the under writer as they say it will be classed as a writeoff, Dent and scratch rear quarter panel scratched door and wheel arch. it could have been so much worse so I thank my luck for that, I am contacting my underwriter to insist it is repaired, but if they don't accept this can I still keep as salvage? and repair myself once I get an agreed value.

any thought or experience with this would be helpful

Just had the same thing. Car was an easy repair, aprox £200. Insurance still wrote the car off. As long as you are nit with Hastings you should be ok. When it is assessed you need to ask that you have cash in lieu of repair. They should let you keep the car minus the salvage value which is somewhere around 10-20% of its actual value before damaged. They consider the millage & overall condition for the value...

this is something you should take into account when taking out insurance cover.
many classic specialists will give you the option when you take out the policy to retain all the salvage so should the worst happen you get the car and a payout incuding sorting out an "agreed valuation".
because these cars arent really worth a lot of money they are very easily written off which makes them harder to sell once written off.
if you plan to keep the car then you might as well deal with the claim privately I.E put the car into the garage and the other party pay the bill.

my neighbor reversed into my 2015 plate 420i bmw and badly scuffed the bumper so i booked it into bmw who took the bumper off and resprayed it to the tune of £185
this would be a lot more if i had gone through the insurance even though it was my neighbors fault
i know yours sounds a lot more serious but i cant see it costing more than £600 worth to a reasonable bodyshop and chances are theres a door in the right colour to be had for less than fixing yours.

I would go down the salvage retention route Steve.

1 - don't let them take the car
2 - negotiate the payout and factor in a 5-10% salvage retention fee - although try to negotiate that to zero given you're not letting them take the car - which costs them money re paying for a truck to pick it up. The main reason that you should keep the car in your possession during this process.
3 - get the car repaired and then re-mot'd - assuming it is just a minor bit of tin/trim work.

The longer you hold out, and the longer you keep the scalper they will have handling your claim on the phone and away from saving money for them on other cases, the more chance you have of retaining this very special old car.

The only argument should be about the value, which is your question. The mileage on yours is epic, but assuming that it's kept in good condition (as it's used regularly for high mileage, I expect that it is) I'd have put a value of around £1500 on yours. This is based on many years of owning, buying, selling and keeping a close eye on eBay, autotrader and classic car sales.

thanks for the help, the lorry driver accepted responsibility so I should be ok, I will speak to the underwriter on Monday morning and let you know what they say, definitely going to keep the car.

car is now in the garage for repairs, going to have cosmetic work done at the same time, will update when its back

Good news, its back from the repair shop, I even got them to paint my other door as it was a bit faded, so now is all shiny again, now a few little items to fix, speedo cable broke last week, exhaust needs new rubber rings and away we go!!!
