HI,
Has anyone managed to keep there car after they say it's a write off ?
Long story short, I hit a car up the rear. Minor damage to the quashqui. Bent the front wing and broke a headlight on mine.. Assessor has written off my car, saying it's beyond economical repair... What nonsence. It's already been hammered back into shape and a new light has been fitted.
They are determined it's a total loss. I disagree. Has anyone managed to get a cash in lieu of repair from hastings

When it happened to me, I had to plead with them to let me keep it. Although my engineers report was worded something like this.
"In view of the recent large sums of money spent on the vehicle it is recommended, that the owner should be able to keep the car" That was in 2010
Possibly that helped the insurance company's decission

Beyond economical repair just means the cost of the repair is too close to what "they" value the car at. Based on the price of new headlight and wings etc plus the cost of painting any parts that need it. It doesn't mean it can't be fixed.
You will be able to keep the car as long as it's not a category a or b write off.
The insurance company will usually pay you the insured/market value of the car less the salvage value.
You may have to get the car checked before you can re-use it. Depending on the severity of the damage.
Never dealt with Hastings before, but I have kept several written off cars in the past and never had any issues doing it.
Ben.

With some minor damage like this, it's better not getting them involved, just fix it.
Unfortunately as you ran into somebody else, he/she probably wanted insurance involvement.
A few years ago, I did something similar, ran into the back of a car. The driver insisted on insurance, etc. Even insisted the police attended; they weren't interested as nobody was injured. I got a new headlamp and bonnet from a scrapyard, reported this to my insurance together with a bill. They paid me and that was that, except I lost my no claim bonus.
My current classic insurance doesn't have no claim bonuses.

Also worth remembering when the insurance company assess the costs involved in the repair they look at the worst case scenario and of course the labour costs. Worth keeping the car, Can't see why they would have an issue with that.

So, after pleading with them I have been unsuccessful in keeping my car... It's being collected by the salvage company 17/11... They did make me an offer I am happy with.
Now the car wont start and it seems to have blown the crankshaft oil seal.. Funny how things work out.

Salvage company may let you buy it back off them.

I contacted the salvage company and the answer was "Yes I can buy it back, all I had to do was pay a membership fee of £50 & then I could bit for it like everyone else"
I will say that i was impressed with the speed of claim settlement & the valuation that was given on the car that was written off.
