Scirocco Register

Thought id start a thread of my daily driver project. I bought it from sumdarkplace of the forum a few months back, it was built in 82 for the 83 market and its a 1.8 manual. these are the mods carried out before I purchased it-
(cut and pasted from the advert)
Scirocco 16v 256mm front brakes with Golf 16v disks (22mm)
Goodridge braided brake hoses all round
Front upper and lower strut braces
K&N panel filter, with airbox modded
Lowering kit - Springs and shocks (Don't know make, but it's old, and could do with replacing, but doesn't leak)
Supersprint (I think) 4 branch manifold (No cracks)
Home made exhaust with Jetex back box (leaks, blows, knocks, and needs replacing, but sounds like a 90's boy racers' wet dream!)
Audi 2.2 Throttle body (I think)
Believed to have a VR6 or uprated clutch. It's heavy, and works damn well, but can't say for sure.
Mountney small steering wheel
Electric twin fans
Headlight wiring replaced with twin relays
Passat 9" servo
Seat Cupra "stubby" 24mm master cylinder (Brakes are brilliant)
centra turbo alloys

so since ive bought it ive carried out the following-
new wishbones and ball joints
fitted a new mid section and a later mk2 back box which needed a fair amount of modification
fitted the original gti 4 button steering wheel
fitted a stereo
changed boot lid struts
removed front upper strut brace as it was hitting the bonnet
new 155/55 r14 tyres
changed the rear lights as they had been painted red

plans-
needs some welding at some point before mot and when the weathers good
needs a repaint as the body work is poor
wheels need a good polish up, after xmas I think
needs lowering a bit more, the tyre gaps a bit big since I changed to lower profile tyres
ive got a votex roof bar kit I may fit at some point
the interior has been changed at some point but id like to put it back to original, this includes new blue carpet and tracking down some glencheck seats and a 2 part parcel shelf.
engine could do with a service and a tune
going to modify the removed strut brace to fit better and a general tidy up of the engine bay

apart from that I'm using it as my daily and will prob take it off the road when my 20vt scala conversion is complete to repaint and do all the work.

This car definitely deserves such attention - I'd be amazed if any 82 interiors were out there sadly.

Yeah interior is gonna be a pain, missed out on a set on eBay which is pants. Carpet I can get new from newtons, parcel shelf I think I'm going to have to make.

I have another 4 made in different woods, yes they are for sale £45+ postage message me if you would like to purchase one. Here's a pic of them all. One on the far left is the one fitted to my car.

been an age since i updated this.

so ive owned the car 2 1/2 years now, just got through its latest mot.

the mot highlighted a few scabby areas that def need doing by next year, so hopefully by the end of the year i can get some time to restore and modify it a bit.

plans are- respray in standard silver, replace some of the tatty interior parts and get the inside clean but standard, except a small discreet boot build and a few little pieces (gear knob, steering wheel etc..

coilovers (GAZ GHA), rear disc conversion, all parts powder coated where needed, poly bush rear beam and front suspension components, stainless exhaust and engine work-

engine choices, not yet decided but these are the engines and components i have and a list of possible conversions or mods-

current engines-
1.8 dx - 2.3 v5- 2.0 agg 8v.

possible conversions-
2.3 on itb's- too costly for itb's etc but would sound good.
1.8- 8v carb or itb's or electronci injection with standalone management
2.0 8v cross flow on carbs
2.0 8v supercharged
2.0 8v itb's stand alone management

im leaning towards 2.0 cross flow on twin dellorto 40's as i have a set, this would also be a nice clean build without too much wiring to bugger about with.

ill change my mind again atleast 7 times before i actually start the build though.

If you're going to expense of ITBs and standalone you may as well get a 2.0 16v. Oh, what's this in my stash - a 2,0 16v engine?

ive got a set of very crusty dellorto's so i think its looking like 2.0 8v crossflow. i believe i can stick a 16v head on my agg i think

Thinking I might have to start the restoration and modification of this one soon.
I reckon it’s gonna take a fair amount of time.

Not updated for a while so here’s what’s been going on with the mighty Gti.

Slammed her on Jom coilovers (bit shite) unfortunately when I got to work I found the front brake line attempting to mate with the drive shaft. So piggy back home and a quick brake line replacement.

Does look good on a trailer though! Since then she’s been running pretty well. Flat front tyre on way to work the other day, spare wouldn’t fit on front so had to fit spare to rear and rear to front, great fun in the rain. So pair of new front tyres were fitted and wheel alignment checked. Wheel alignment was spot on, no idea how as I had set the camber by eye during the coilovers fitment. Rear beam is nice and straight though which is handy to know for the rebuild whenever that happens. Few intermittent elec issues currently but nothing that stops her. I do enjoy driving her, no where near the power or smoothness of my 20vt but still puts a smile on my face, also gets a lot of positive remarks from other drivers, only time in my life I feel vaguely cool.

Bit of an update, she’s been off the road for a couple of weeks sorting some rust. New drivers full outer sill, patch repair of inner seal and floor where it joins the sill. All nice and solid now, although it’s now got a black wing and black sill, I’ll paint it at some point.
