Do I have a bypass valve?

Hi everyone,

I've recently bought a Mk2 with a 1.8t conversion. The heater only blows hot so I set about checking the bypass valve, however it looks like I don't have one!

Can anyone help me out and post a picture of where the bypass control valve should be so I know I'm looking in the right place. I'm looking at the two pipes going into the bulkhead from the engine bay side and can't see anything that looks like a valve.

Cheers

on a normal 1.8 it will have one of these just inboard of the bulkhead

a stiff cable then runs back to the lever in the car. these break quite often, so it may be broken if you do have one. on a 1.8t conversion it may be different somehow though.

Even on a 1.8t car, the standard heater control valve should still be used.

Can't think of any reason to completely bypass it, unless the previous owner lived in Siberia.

Thanks for the replies.

I've had the dash out to do some other work a week or so ago and then found there was no heater control cable, so the slider control would have never worked anyway. I then set about looking for the control valve and I'm sure that's missing too as I can't see it anywhere - I'll get some pics when I get home later and post them up so you can have a look.

On another note does anyone know where I can get hold of a control cable? Not sure if the same part is used on a Mk2 Golf for example? And I don't even know the length of the original so am slightly in the dark!

Bit of a late reply on this one, been working away from home but finally managed to get round to taking some pics yesterday.

Pic of the coolant pipes entering the bulkhead is below - No bypass valve in sight. It looks like the gap where it should be has been bridged by a 100mm pipe. Any ideas on why this might've been done when the engine was swapped?
