Scirocco Register

Afternoon all, was hoping to get some advice..

I seem to be having a bit of a nightmare with my Pierburg of late! The car seems to start and stall on first few attempts unless I'm revving the engine hard. I also think the butterfly valve is opening before the engine is fully warm causing it to stall when idle. I have been researching / scanning this forum for a resolution but nothing I've tried seems to make any difference. It has a recently installed wax stat...Any help would be massively appreciated. maybe flushing through the cooling system might help?
check all your vac pipes as theres so any off them if one is split it will cause issues.
if this is a problem that has just happened its most likely some thing has broke or become blocked/dislodged or has this been a gradual issue?

thanks for the advice / reply James - it happened suddenly about a week ago. Been having a few ongoing issues but they seem to have been fixed with the new wax stat. Do you think it's worth buying some vac pipes first?

yeah i would give it a go as its probably the cheapest thing to replace on those carbs.

if you could spray carb cleaner on all the pipes if one is split or perished the engine will react by increase in revs or cutting out thereby finding the leak.

other issue could be crud has got into it somewhere so a strip down clean and rebuild may be on the cards but try the vac pipes first and check the carb over in general just to make sure its nothing simple.

nice one, think I've got some carb cleaning lying around somewhere so will give that a go first. Hoping that is what it is! Thanks for your help

***Update***Just fitted new vacuum hoses and sprayed a load of carb cleaner but doesn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas what would make the revs go up and down when when idling? cheers!

I don't have a Pierburg but others may find it useful.

would love to give specifics but I'm not entirely sure what made the difference - I changed a few vacuum hoses and tinkered with the idle screw. I think there always a gap between the 3/4 and the idle screw. I wound in until they touched when it was warmed up, then found the correct idle point (just under a 1000) hope that makes sense?

the 3/4 unit is what controls the idle based on vaccuum isnt it?
if it wasnt in contact with the throttle plate/spindle then it cant control the idle hence why you might have had these problems.
im glad you have sorted it though as they are a pain when they go wrong
