Scirocco Register

I bought a mk2 1.8 carb a few months back my first ever mk2.
its pretty quick..

Ive owned lots and lots of older cars, but this is the fastest of the lot.
only 90bhp? but it flies, up hill in 4th rather than third, or 5th rather than 4th...

I admit a lot of my previous cars were never known for speed, but ive had 2.8 capris, lots of 2 litre fords.
the only car to come close was a late 80s 2.2 audi coupe, that was also fast, but 129 bhp.

the replacement engine is apparently out of a mk2 golf, now done 60k the scirocco has done 160k all told.
maybe its lost non of its 90 horses, and my other cars had, especially the heavy thirsty rough v6s.

well there it is, thought I would share my surprise..

i was quite surprised at the spriteness of the scirocco
you have to remember its not held back back electronic wizardry that most cars have and that instant throttle response that you only typically get from carb cars makes it seem all the faster, (only 90 bhp but all off them on tap makes a big difference).
its also not unusual for them to get even faster as they age mainly due to the block not really running in till its done 100,000 miles!!

You should try the fuel injected version. Also the rocco is quite light which gives you an edge ob modern 2 door coups

The Audi Coupe was also about 300kg heavier than your Scirocco.

Had my Scirocco weighed on an agricultural weigh station once and it came up as 0.96 tonnes (completely standard). They're pretty light!

TBH - the 1.8 carbed cars can be surprisingly sprightly up to a point where the DX and KR naturally move ahead - I've got an example of each and in real world driving my old GTL can keep up with modern traffic well enough; the torqueyness also helps give the impression of some decent pull.

I have owned 3 over the years, including, for about 8 years, a nice shiny black DX (injected). When I bought our current one (a "keeper") 4 years ago I was instantly very pleasantly surprised at it's engine performance. It's "only" an 85GTS (carb) but I'm sure it's quicker than my old GTX was. Thing is, you can never be sure when you buy a car like this, that may have had many owners and may have had all sorts done to it, what you have under the bonnet. As I say mine is very willing and feels very "revvy". It may have had a cam and port job etc for all I know, as yours may have had.
