Scirocco Register

Hi guys,

As I've got some time this week to look at my scirocco, I was looking at the engine bay and noticed the fuel lines/clutch cable are dangerously close to the alternators cooling blades... after closer inspection I noticed a small snag in the fuel line and it was leaking.

Is something missing to keep these cables away from that area of the engine?

I believe there was originally a clip connecting the fuel line to the clutch cable, but a zip tie would do the trick. Your HT leads look a little long, other than that it all seems normal to me.

Here's what a standard carb engine bay looks like. Yours is going to be a bit different as it has a Weber carb conversion.

I've got a weber carb? I cant really test out the power yet as the clutch slips after 4k rpm.

There's no extra power from the Weber, it's just a simpler carb with a manual choke, that most people find easier to maintain than the Pierberg (which is a better carb when it's working properly... but not many people understand them well enough to look after them properly).

You would also benefit from replacing that bolt on filter for a standard air box and panel filter to reinstate the cold & hot air feeds. Not as much of an issue this time of year but you will probably have problems with that setup over the colder months.

Yeah, we can tell you have a weber as the vacuum reservoir has been removed and a manual choke cable is visible...Much less complicated to maintain. A few years ago I measured the CFM of both the 2e2 carb and the 32/34 weber and the weber is slightly smaller so would actually produce marginally less power than the pierburg...Very small amount though, wouldn't even register as 1hp i'd imagine.

I just took some close up photos, seems to be a slight leak from the left side too..

Thats a vacuum line, it's usually blocked off at the front. I have one from the rear running to just before the brake boaster, then down to the dizzy advance. Maybe yours is blocked at the rear (No pun intended)

I take it that's a brand new unit? I just took the filter off out of interest, gave it abit of a clean up:

As Ben says, if you fit a standard air filter box you will gain two little clips on the underside of it where two of the cables near your alternator clip onto.

There should also be a white plastic clip that holds, I think, three cables together as shown in one of the earlier pictures.

I have cable tied my fuel lines to the alternator bracket to stop them flapping about.
I have also tried to move the fuel filter away from the hot engine by adding more hose but not sure if it make any difference?
Where is your breather hose going to? it runs from the rocker cover to just behind the air filter.. is it just open at the end?

Mk1 Sirocco with Webber so may be slightly different..


The air hose on the front of mine goes to the air filter but my Webber is a 32 DMTR?
