Couple of more , the mk1 golf was a 1.3 ls and the scirocco mk1 was bought for spares for the alloy wheels to go on the golf. it was as rotten as a peach. at some stage it had brand new genuine outer wings ,doors, bonnet. lights , bumpers and tailgate fitted along with a respray but the inner and outer sills were rotten and full of filler as were the A posts , windscreen surround and inner wings.

Tried for ages to pass on the new parts and interior to a deserving owner but in pre E Bay times nobody wanted them , put adverts in the VW mags but not a bite (all I wanted was for them to pay the postage).

To my shame the whole lot ended up going to the tip

The best one of the lot was my 1990 Scala injection, uprated suspension, brakes , exhaust etc ...... the only car I genuinely missed after I sold it

The GTX had been a cat d (minor underbonnet fire) and took a while to be sorted properly , shocking brakes ,worn out suspension but it was cheap

Thanks for sharing, those first two are a lovely bit of nostalgia. We all gain a few "if only..." moments over time.

I gave away a 2CV for free in the early 2000s... you can't get a rot box for under a grand now.

At least the Mk1 didn't die in vain, it was a 1500 motor with a weber twin choke and eventually ended up being swapped into a mk1 golf 1100 along with the better brakes , suspension and the arb's, strangely even though the bits were free he didn't want the beige velour interior .

I will try and dig out some pics of what happened after we realised just how rotten it really was , what else was there to do but cut off the roof and rag it around the fields until we decided that it would be fun to remove the doors and it snapped in half !

I think only the handbrake cables , brake and fuel lines were holding the two ends together .

If nothing else, it's a good demonstration of why a car designed to have no roof from the start is always going to be a better way to go topless motoring (with all respect to our Scirocco cabrio driving comrades).

(I'm sure it was also good fun at the time).
