should the dizzy cap be a male version? all the leads ive seen in local motorfactors don't seem to fit very well and almost look as if they are supposed to fit over a small screw end of a spark plug (they have a small white plastic collar on them too? which doesn't fit in the female dizzy cap I have!)

There is 2 types of dissy cap, early cars have no pin and later cars have a pin in the middle.
My 1978 mk1 scirocco has this type of cap.



My 1988 mk1 golf gti has this type.

I guess you have bought the wrong type of dissy cap?

I just tried to find a picture on the web and it seems 1984 was the change over year for pin type dissy caps.
