I saw this at Cranleigh show for £48 but didn't have enough money for it.... Would you guys recommend me getting this? I am new to all this in terms of learning about how cars work and new to the classic scene as well. The diagrams are very useful and does provide useful information. However it comes and was produced in America so not sure how relevant it is :?

They do however give measurements e.g. in both metric and imperial so does seem to cover both!!

Cheers

I would play it safe and track down a copy of the Haynes manual instead - you'll have peace of mind that it's 'right'.

I do have the Haynes manual but I am not to keen on the diagrams etc. I feel that they expect you to know what all the parts are etc and where to find everything.

This book labels the diagrams so you know where to look etc plus the way they word it seems simpler.

Thanks though

Bentley manuals are quite well-regarded, but the Haynes is probably the one to get for a UK car.

The Bentley manual is good but I would hold out as they appear on the bay far cheaper if listed as an auction. Don't just go for a buy it now. I only use it to double check things as there is more info in it regarding the 16v engine option.

Lots of pictures on parts base if you need exploded diagrams.

Does the Haynes manual have the correct tech specs for the DX engine?
I'm looking for a manual with all the correct DX data.

Bentley is king here in the USA, but they only cover US models (i.e., JH).
Sometimes Haynes manuals have typos or incorrect data (at least the ones here do... I don't know if they're the same everywhere)

Yes, the Haynes covers the DX engine. If it's just engine info you're after, you'd probably find all the info you want in a mk1 Golf manual as well.

the Bentley does give extra info that is useful but as stated deals with PL (KR) 16v in more depth however i have found it useful for electrics and some tests.
PM me and I can possibly help out with a cheaper copy....

Right, the Bentley Cabriolet & Scirocco manual I have covers US-spec JH and PL 16V only.

Here's what I've learned since: US and UK Haynes manuals are not the same.
[I didn't understand why edmundator made the distinction between a Golf manual vs a Scirocco manual until I discovered this.]

The US Haynes versions are pretty sad.
The older copy I have is basically all of the Mk1 gas (petrol) models thrown together.
[And it's less than half the thickness of any of my Mk1 Bentley manuals.]
The later version of the US Haynes is the same except all the Mk1 and Mk2 (aka A1 & A2 platform) thrown together, presumably while sacrificing even more content.

Whereas in the UK you seem to have a better breakdown of models per Haynes manual.
I found that there's a dedicated UK Scirocco II manual that covers 1982-up. That's the one for me! :good:
I should be able to snag one off UK eBay/Amazon without much fuss.

Thanks for the feedback

That's the one I use and find it perfectly OK (except for the wiring diagrams Image )

Yes exactly :-D

I would bid on that one but £20 to ship is harsh. £10 would be normal for a book that size.
