Depends what you want to end up with and if you want to stay standard or not.
8v, 16v, g60, 20vt, vr6, v5, tdi have all been put in the a1 chassis, probably others aswell. Some are more suitable than others. But ultimately it depends what you want out of it.
Ben.

If the old engine's any good and you want to get rid, I would be interested.

1.8t is a fairly simple swap. And very effective in terms of power to cost. Most parts are available off the shelf if you don't want to make things. I have details of a guy that will sort the ecu and wiring to make it pretty much 'plug & play' for a very reasonable price.
PM me if you want any more info, and if you want to make things like engine mounts I have plans that I can send over. If you want to tackle wiring yourself there is a very thorough guide on club gti.
I've got an AGU in my mk2, pretty much a standard engine and I'm more than happy with it. You can of course go much further in terms of power if you (and your bank account) so desire.
Ben.

Don't forget you may need to upgrade the brakes but depends on what you have fitted.
