As above,
Disaster of a weekend.
Went out on Saturday morning to post some ebay items off and my faithful old pal wouldn't start no matter how I tried.
Spent the rest of the day checking all the usual suspects and still ziltch.
Had some assistance with the s-i-l with his multi meter thinggy and she is still not kicking in.
We reckon there is fuel getting through, new spark plugs, coil, king lead and fuel filter fitted and there appears to be power to the dizzy but we are NOT getting a spark when we try to bridge it onto the engine. Tried it with a plug on the end and just the bare end but no sign of a spark.
We are coming to the conclusion it has something to do with the Hall sender or is this away off the mark ??????
Are hall senders readily available ?????????
Would a dizzy from a 1.8 injection fit a 1.6 carb or is it a completely different set up as I may have one ???????
Any clues on what to do next would be appreciated.
I'll be trawling the net looking for answers so don't be surprised if you see this on other sites.

Is the engine earth strap still intact?

Ignition module under the raintray is more likely to go than the Hall sender, mine died from one day to the next.. Also check the connection from the distributior to the module.

If you shop around carefully you can pick up a module quite cheaply (I paid < £20), don't pay a VW dealer £200!

Working on the assumption that the starter motor is kicking the engine over I have assumed that the main earth is OK, but I will check this.
The earth from the rocker cover to the bulkhead is pretty ropey and will be getting replaced asap.
May have a spare ignition module but it will be from a 1.8 inj so I don't know if it will be compatible with the 1.6 carb model.
The s-i-l checked the multi-plug with his multimeter and said the readings were fine.
Off to the shed to start looking for a spare ignition module and dizzy - may be gone a while if you saw my shed.

Latest news is that I have found one dizzy, not got round to checking Part Number yet as I am sure I have another lurking about in the shed.

While prowling the internet I came across this that may be of some use to the members on here especially those across the water.

Just my luck the ones I found are a 026 905 206 which I think I got with a load of early Golf spares by pure accident and a 026 905 206A which I am pretty certain is off my old 84 1.8 injection that I had to scrap.
The 206A has a fancy rotor arm under the cap, that is the only difference that I can see as they look so similar.
Anyone interested in two redundant dizzy's ?????
If it ever stops raining here I'll see if I can make out the part No on the dizzy that is in at present.
Now I know where the part no is located I'll try and get a picture of it in situ.

These are the two dizzy's I have, the one on the left is, I think, from an early golf and the Part No is 026 905 206.
The one on the right is from a 1.8 inj that I used to own and the part no on that is 026 905 206A.

I was looking to see if you had a spare ignition module that I could borrow til mine arrives.
Hopefully mine should be here tomorrow but as it is coming from Newry NI and they don't tell you it may take 2 days to arrive til after you buy it, I just thought on the off chance that you may have a spare.
Fingers crossed it will be here tomorrow, as long as it arrives no later than Saturday it gives me the weekend to work on it.
It would be good to know if you have a spare just in case as I need the car next week for a couple of trips.
The Part No on mine is 191 905 351 B just in case you find a spare one.
If I do need one I could collect Sat afternoon if it is suitable to you.

Re. distributors, the important thing to note first is that there were lots of subtle part number changes on the Bosch units (which yours is) fitted to the 1.6 between 1985 and 1988.

Mine is a late 1986 1.6 GT manual with the EW engine and has the original unit fitted, which is VW part no. 026 905 206 AD. Most of the changes to the codes are in the lettering at the end. Manual is different to auto. The changes reflect minor changes in the design of the cap and insulator (e.g. later ones don't have the metal ring around the cap) and minor changes to the barrel. In general though, the number stays the same but the letter coding changes.

Because there were so many changes to the part numbers, VW sell a Bosch unit nowadays that supersedes all of these original numbers and will fit your car. If you strongly suspect its the dizzy, then although it won't be cheap I'll be worth doing - you'll be surprised how crucial a quality unit is to the car's performance.

I think German & Swedish still sell a cheap spurious make dizzy that will fit for around £50. It's a lot cheaper than forking £150-odd for genuine just to eliminate it from inquiries. Word of warning though - their performance is inferior to the Bosch in my experience.

Finally, there are still places that can repair them, such as H&H Ignition solutions in the midlands that would probably be able to repair your genuine unit provided it's not too worn.
