Scirocco Register

Hi all, I have just put another `rocco back on the road after a 5 year layup by a previous owner.It is a 1990 Scala injection similar to the one we have run as a daily driver for the last 11 years. I have repaired the tilt and slide sunroof by making up new slides and got that now working properly. What I am after is a suitable material to recover the trim panels with as the current ones are manky. The roof lining is vinyl but the trim panels that cover up the mechanism is more of a cloth material--any suggestions.
So far the list of replacements to get it roadworthy are as follows
new pads and shoes and back brake mechanics
new in tank fuel pump and bobbins for the inline fuel pump
new slides for sunroof--handmade
aux air valve
rebushed gear linkage
Distributer Cap and Rotor arm
Cam belt and tensioner--I never trust anyones word regarding when and if cambelt has been replaced.
Various electrical issues--previous owner wasn`t very good with the wiring!!
Put it through M.O.T. last week and it passed without any problems--needs new brake fluid though--overall pressures a little low.
I have some problems with the idle speed when the engine is cold. The warm up regulator has been stripped and rebuilt which didn`t cure the problem--aux air valve changed--still no cure. The fuel system may have some crap in it causing pressure problems. I found a lot of crap in the tank and also in the warmup regulator.Next thing to strip is the fuel distributer and see if there is anything in there.Failing that the warmup reg and fuel distrbuter is coming off the daily driver which is going to be retired on the 1st July for spares. The standard suspension is coming off and will be transplanted into the "new"one--I HATE coil overs!!--anyone know what the standard camber angle is for stock scirocco scala injection 1.8
If anyone has a busted tilt and slide sunroof that has broken guides if you could send me them and I will make new ones that will give your sunroof a new lease of life.

gonna need some pictures of the car really to make a decision on any of these points :) how did you make the runners? they snap far too easily. I could never get mine to adjust correctly to not scratch the sunroof metal and someone mentioned there are two sizes / shapes and maybe i have the wrong ones. who know?

the sunroof is like a furry cloth. I think i went to an upholstery company to get mine. Same with my headlining. it was really stretchy from memory! if you still have the old manky one they sjhould be able to match it. Or remove the old one a give it a damn good clean? it always looks black to start with!

Hi Steve,Thanks for the quick reply. There are two types of sunroof guides that will fit that sunroof.
Type 1 is fitted to the Golf series which is a tilt only
Type 2 is fitted to the Scirocco and certain Audi models and is tilt and slide.
As far as I know (I may be wrong ) The golf ones only have 1 slot and if fitted to the scirocco it will bind on the roof.
The correct ones have 2 slots and the slide pins fit to the rearmost slot and not the front slot as I found out.
If you have the correct ones then as the mech starts,the runner travels alpng the outermost edge of the guide until it meets with the rear slot. At this point the pin enguages in the slot and the metal panel starts to drop. If you have the slide pins fitted into the front slot then the panel will catch the roof as it slides. This caught me out the first time. The tilt mech has 2 pins which enguage in the front slot to raise the panel when the handle is cranked opposite way.
The material that VW made the slides from is a cast alumium and is fragile.
The material I made mine from came from a local scrap metal merchant and is a hard rolled alli. They were actually some name plates from doors and were approx 4mm thick.
The original slides allways break at the same point and being cast alli are uterly useless. Any rolled aluminium will do and can be found online for 6-7 quid for a piece that will do for both slides. Most important is that the slots match and are wide enough for the pins to run smoothly. Mine took an hour of fettling to get the roof to run properly after sussing out the guide slots. When I have got the hang of this new smart phone I will post some pictures of the guides in place. The last few pages deal with the sunroof fitted to the scirocco/jetta/rabbit models and has a good fault finding section.
