Re: Is this a GTX?
Yes, it's an 85 so there's no reason why not. I've never seen that interior though - it may well have been an Armed Forces order and had a different spec to UK cars.

Re: Is this a GTX?
The kit looks like the Kamei kit fitted to early European GTXs. Except that the rear spoiler is wrong (non-bodykit version) and the seats are wrong (same fabric as '84-spec GTI). It's a bit of a mongrel. An early GTX should also have Avus wheels, not 13" tarantulas. It could be a late-registered GTI that's had a Kamei kit and a GTX badge added (Dr Dub's site suggests that Kamei GTXs should have printed decals like the Storm badges, rather than the usual plastic ones as seen here).

Re: Is this a GTX?
In my humble opinion, it looks like a GTI rather than a GTX. Maybe it's worth checking the date moulded on the rear of the 'SCIROCCO GTX' badge. If it's later than the date of manufacture of the car, then it's a sure thing that it's been fitted afterwards. As Ed says, wrong tailgate spoiler for a GTX and no AVUS alloys, they could have been changed though. Hmm, something of an enigma. Maybe the second part of the type number on the vin sticker would help. 534 ???. Maybe somebody wanted the look of the first German GTX on their GTI.
Edit. Just noticed that it has a GT badge on the B-pillar, not GTX.

Re: Is this a GTX?
This is my car and think ive gotten to bottom of it now finally, its a very late gti it was registered jan 31st 85. I did a carcheck vin number checks out as does engine number. So its just a gti with a gtx badge and kit had me guessing for past couple of weeks as to what is was. Which are more desirable the gtx or gti? Do I take the kit and badge off or buy the larger rear spoiler? Cheers guys.

Re: Is this a GTX?
@Ed and Richie - early GTXs came with the small spoiler too. Although you're probably right and this one might well be a GTI.
@Jim - I think originality is more desirable. In any case GTI or GTX, it would have come with the small spoiler. What does it say on the V5c?

Re: Is this a GTX?
Welcome to the Register Jim.
I like the look of your Rocco the way it is. There aren't many with the Kamei kit so I'd leave it on. If you happen to see a SCIROCCO GTI badge then change it, no big deal if not. GTX or GTI more desirable? These days as long as it's another Rocco on the road it doesn't matter either way.
Sean, are you sure early GTXs had the first type small spoiler? I've never seen that, even on German spec the GTX. Now you've got me thinking. Time for me to scour Google images for confirmation.

Re: Is this a GTX?
Yep, there was another B plate GTX on ebay recently with a small spoiler and even the Jan 85 brochure shows one with Avus and small spoiler.

Re: Is this a GTX?
No joy with a pic of a GTX with a small spoiler so far. Even the GTX in the Jan 85 brochure has the bigger version 2 spoiler.
This is really going to bug me.
To the uninitiated, there were three different tailgate spoilers. Take a look at this link to see the differences.

Re: Is this a GTX?
Im sure the v5 said gtx but thats been sent off now so cant say for sure maybe its coz dvla dont list a gti on that year? But why would it show gti on a car check thought they got info from dvla, I had a import skyline gtst but was listed as a gtr on logbook. The thing thats getting me still is the rear arch liners, didn't think there were fitted to gti's and headlight washers. But then it doesn't have the interior of a gtx but it does have the mfa computer not sure if they came on gti.

Re: Is this a GTX?
DVLA often get details wrong, plus owners can (or used to be able to) easily change details on the form by sending the altered V5 back.
This is an '84 spec GTI, which I think is what you have, but registered late:
I'd put it back to standard, unless you've got proof that the dealer added the bodykit etc - a GTI is a very rare beast indeed.

Re: Is this a GTX?
Yeah seems to have all the same bits as mine even down to the chrome inserts in the door cards. Going to collect the history file for car this weekend off of the previous owner that might shed some light as to what it really is and when kit was fitted pretty certain its a gti now, apparently it has full service history too which is a bonus. I took the tank off to clean out and replaced the fuel pump and i was surprised how solid it is underneath looks to have never been welded and all i can find is a 10p size hole in the rear of passenger sill ive also replaced all the brakelines and replaced the flexes with braided. Going to put battery on charge tonight and some fresh fuel in tomorrow and see if the old gal fires up.

Re: Is this a GTX?
If the engine has not run in a year or more best to remove the rotor arm and spin the engine over a couple of times on the starter to get the oil pressure up, then fit the rotor arm and try again.
You may find it will take some time to start as you have removed the tank and the fuel system need to fill up.
Did you replace the fuel pump under the car or the one inside the fuel tank (if you have one)?
Hope it starts and runs.

Re: Is this a GTX?
take the plugs out too, so the starter isnt fighting the compression of the engine, this will make it easier to whiz the engine over to pump the oil round.mark1gls wrote:If the engine has not run in a year or more best to remove the rotor arm and spin the engine over a couple of times on the starter to get the oil pressure up, then fit the rotor arm and try again.
