Help Please!!

Picked the scirocco up from having some welding done and she pissed her water everywhere! Had a look and the dual thermo switch thingy has broken off at one end. Part number is 035919369A, but nobody appears to be able to get them anymore!
Anyone had this issue and know of a replacement or different fix? Or where I can get one please?

What are the 2 coolant sensors going to? do you need them?

Err do you mean the flange with the thermoswitch and coolant temp sender. Are seen your pic

. You will either have to convert to a flange plastic type like the the mk2 golfs and later mk2 scirocco's or fit some inline radiator adapters

Yup, that's it, I've emailed them for availability but haven't had a reply yet, not holding out as it is discontinued everywhere else.
I have no idea what they do, I'm raised on air-cooleds, not used to this coolant system malarky. There does seem to be an over abundance of sensors in the cooling system though.
You can't see the wiring very well. Wire goes on to one switch, from the other terminal of that switch, two wires come out, one goes nowhere and the other goes to the other switch. The second terminal off that switch disappears into the loom.

Do the later ones come with the sensors fitted?

No you screw your old sensors to the inline adaptor. I'm sure you can still buy the sensors if needed. Try vw heritage or crazy quiffs
Or you will have to convert to the plastic flange type and rewire new sensors. I will take a pic later of the plastic flange setup

Only trouble is that the sensors don't unscrew, they spin round but don't come out.

Cool, cheers mate. Mine has a weber fitted with a manual choke so I don't need that one, do I? What's with the manifold heater one?

Am I right in thinking that basically both these sensors are to do with the auto choke? In which case, can I just leave them out?

You should be fine if your running a manual choke without the preheater.
Wiring diagram for the choke and preheater are on page 304 in the Haynes manual

My Mk1 with a Webber Carb has no preheated as there was not one fitted by VW and it runs fine, it's got water from the engine running around the inlet manifold to help heat/cool it.

Cheers guys, fitted the 'new' on, didn't connect the sensor and she started and ran fine. But...........
Now I'm not sure if the coolant system is working properly. There was still water in there, topped it up, let her tick over and kept toppig up the water as it went down. (This an early 1.5 with no expansion tank, top fill rad).
Once she was up to temp. I topped up the water and let it tick over. After a minute or so the water level went right down and then a short while the rad was overflowing and spitting water out everywhere. Every minute or so it does this, level drops down, then starts overflowing.
The bottom hose is cold, top hose is hot. If I squeeze the bottom hose you can see the level in the rad change.
Any ideas please?

Make sure the heater is set to hot. Take the top hose off at the radiator end and pour coolant into the head, get in as much as you can with the hose held up then quickly fit it to the radiator as coolant my be pouring out of the hose, tighten up clips.
Then fill up your radiator and fit the cap, start your engine and check the hoses are getting hot while running, also check the heater in the car is blowing out hot air and keep an eye on your temperature gauge and feel for the bottom hose to get hot.
Switch off and let it cool down before opening cap and checking/filling the coolant level.
It does sound like you have an air lock, it's really easy to get an air lock in the top fill radiator.

Cool, thank you very much, don't mind if it's just an air lock. I had to stop running it as she was nearly out of petrol and I didn't want to drag crap off the bottom of the tank (ran the petrol down low when she went off to be loaded). I'll get some fuel in her and give that /\ a go.
