But then he grew up driving Austin and then leyland cars, which really were knackered by the time they got to 70k.
My Dad wasn't very mechanical but used to have a peugeot 505 estate because of the large boot and it could hold the family. Not a bad motor. Then he traded it in and came home with an Austin Maxi. With the seats folded down it had a large boot! Big heap of dung. It's only good features where the wooden dash and the fact it had five gears and was fairly quiet on the motorway at 65. Apart from that it never ever started if it was cold or damp. Even stored in a garage it was a pig to start. It even needed the starter motor banged with a hammer to get it to turn on occasions. Meanwhile my mother kept her trusty VW Beatle. Even on the coldest of days it started with the hand crankshaft method. Austin Maxi, 60, 000 miles and off to the scrapyard and probably got weighed in pretty quick as every part was knackered. Boy did I hate that car! If I got payed to take one now the answer would be no.

Points about newer cars are valid, most are lease or company cars.
I had a corsa for a few years and literally drive it into the ground. The company cared nearly as little as I did.
Had the seat after that and really, really liked it. Took proper care of it and was really sad to see it go when I left.
Keep the Audi really clean, had it since last April and not modded anything on it. That's a 53 plate but you'd think it was half that age.
Maybe it's time to get another toy to join it?

Re: i must be getting old
I've had 3 works cars, and although its not mine I've always looked after them as though they were, to be honest that's because I always have the option to buy them when the 3 /4 years is up. But pool cars now that's a different story lol
Now though I'm needing to replace it with something that will be mine and the cars some dealers are selling these days, they don't car if its all scraped around the corners, there picking them up ex lease or from auctions and just moving them on. Saw an Golf R32, for £10,500 the other day and apart from the flat body work, its rear lights were full of water!!!!

I've noticed that too, dealers not bothering to make any effort to spruce a car up. A friend bought a car for around £5k recently from a dealer who agreed to paint the front wing on it due to a deep scrape, really quick job done and the rest of the car had loads of minor scrapes that they had to pay to get buffed out after buying it. Think people are accepting "a few age related marks" too much!
