mk1 golf gti engine on pierburg

Hi,I have searched but can't find the right answer. Basically the 1.8 carb engine is goosed so I have bought a 1.8 8v gti engine which I'm guessing is from a mark 1 gti as it appears to have kjet and looks otherwise the same as the scirocco engine. Can I effectively swap the 2 manifolds, connect everything else up and run it? It's my Mrs pride and joy and I need it up and running asap so converting to injection is not the way ahead just yet. Any advice or links would be welcome. Apparently there was an FAQ that has been linked to many times but the link is dead.

Iirc block the injector holes with pennies and you're good to go

still bolts stright onto the fornt of the block doesnt it?
isnt there a metal coolant pipe sticking out of the back of gti heads that have to be cut off to fit the carb manifold?

Don't know about the fuel pump. It might have a blanking plate over it. If not, just fit a low pressure electric pump. Power it from a relay powered by the coil feed or carb shutoff solenoid

There is no water/coolant pipe on the back of a DX head, there may be a air pipe (to add air to the fuel injectors)
I thought that the Carb heads had a water pipe running around them to the inlet manifold to heat it up?

Picture of a later DX head with air should injectors (pipe between Cyinders 3 and 4) and hydraulic tappets, you can see the 4 holes near the top of the head for the fuel injectors. I'll try and get a better picture for you.

you can see the coolant pipe i refer too in your picture mark1gls between inlet 3 and 4 where the manifold bolts up to, just above the stud sticking out. it looks like a short metal pipe sticking out of the head maybe 2cm long, on the carb version that coolant pipe isn't there its just a flat hole and a special seal goes between the mating face of the carb manifold and the cylinder head.
before the carb manifold can be bolted on im sure this short pipe needs cutting off flush with the head

As Nate suggested you will need to get a small electric fuel pump as the carb engine has a mechanical pump on the front of the block whereas the injection engine doesn't. In place of it it has what looks like a high pressure pump but it's an electronic warm up valve (makes fuel mixture richer during warm up - obviously a carb engine has a choke). The pump for the injection engines is in the tank

P.s There is a blanking plate behind said warm up valve - possible that if this was removed the mechanical pump would slot in - but good luck getting the socket head bolts undone :?

Some better pictures for you, the "coolant pipe mentioned" which is an air shroud you can see in this photo, you don't want water running around it as it runs to the 4 injectors then into the inlet chambers as you can see now I've removed the injector seats.

where the water inlet/outlet is on this carb manifold will interfere with the air shroud pipe. this is why i was convinced it must be a coolant outlet as it would be on a carb head?
i wanted to put a gti head on my carb engine because of the bigger valves, but couldn't mount my manifold without cutting that sticky out pipe off first.
if it is an air shroud im really glad i didnt use it because the carb manifold would link it up with the coolant circuit.
sorry if ive got the wrong end of the stick here.
