Help! Clutch problem.

Hi, recently swapped my xr4x4 for a mk2 1.8 Scirocco, got it with the clutch being really hard to operate, as in you had to brace yourself in seat!
bought a clutch kit and fitted it this morning, problem is its same as before. But! I noticed that when you take the slack up in the cable (new), there is only a few mm left for the arm to operate before it hits the engine mount.??
Could do with a pic of how the wire circlip holds the plate and might sound stupid but should it have a release bearing of some description
Seems odd because when you move the clutch arm by hand you can feel the pin from gearbox hit the diaphram? Any ideas, pics, help pretty please :)

Steve

The release bearing is under the green pressed steel plate on the side of the gearbox.

The clutch operates in an odd fashion compared to a lot of cars. There is a rod that goes down the length of the input shaft that pushes on a plate over the pressure plate "fingers".

If you have adjusted the slack and the actuating arm is too high, the release bearing has possibly collapsed, also the rod may have worn. I had one that had turned into a nice little mushroom at both ends and had ground away the area it comes into contact on the release plate.

The rod was still be available from vw when mine did this.

Also worth replacing the clutch cable in case it is over stretched, oil the new one.
EDIT; ^ just noticed you have a new cable, but oiling it does make a big difference.
And check the bulkhead where the cable goes through.
And check the cable runs as smoothly as possible, any unnessecary bends can make the clutch feel heavy.

Hi Ben, just changed the "new" clutch cable for a new one yesterday, now have a very light clutch, brilliant now... :)
