Hi all,

I'm in the process of renewing the piston rings and big end shells in my GT2 (engine code EX) but am unsure how tight I'll need to do up the nuts on the big ends when I come to put it back together.... Presumably there's a torque setting but I've no idea what it is and the trusty Haynes manual doesn't seem to know either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'll start by saying this is an area I'm unfamiliar with, but I do have the Bentley and Haynes manuals so I took a look at the values for the connecting rod big-end cap nuts:

The Bentley manual indicates there are different final torques for different engines. The JH engine specifies a torque of 30Nm followed by an additional 1/4 turn (90 degrees). For other engines covered by the Bentley (FX, EJ, EN), they say to torque to 45Nm.

The Haynes manual does have a table on page 24 with torque values and there are two different torques depending on bolt thread diameter. They say for M9 bolts, tighten to 45Nm, but for M8s, tighten to 30Nm, then an additional 90 degrees. This seems to agree with what's in the Bentley. The also indicate when you are checking the bearing clearance initially, to only tighten to 30Nm.
