Scirocco Register

Right so I will be entering the world of scirocco ownership on Saturday.
I originally had big plans for a bigger engine and all that.
But seeing the imaculate condition of the engine and bay I think I now want to keep it as standard as possible with just
a carb upgrade. Only thing is I know nothing about carb engines.
Engine is a 1600.
If anyone has any advice, tips or pointers in the general direction of info/ parts to do this upgrade would be great help.
I'm pretty clued up on more modern engines but carb engines are bit before my time.
I have heard of weber carbs but would have no idea of how to install one.
Is this something one can do them selves or will the assistance of a garage be needed?
There is an old boy In the neighbouring village called Tom airey, some of you may have heard of him, old school rally driver. I have been told he may be able to help. Nice chap met him once before. He has a rolling road in his garage.

You'll get varying opinions on this where ever you look.

There appears to be no performance difference between the Weber and the Pierburg. If the Pierburg is working ok, why would you change it?

Most people seem to swap to a Weber when they can no longer work out what's wrong with their somewhat complicated Pierburg. I struggled with mine for 9 months but sorted it in the end. There's loads of info all over vw forums, I just didn't wanna spend nearly £300 for no extra power... and you then have a manual choke.

All personal choice and depends on the state of your carb.

^^^ what he said. The DMTL Weber won't give you any extra performance, despite what some people think. It's cruder technology, so probably makes a bit more noise, which is what fools people into thinking there's more power.

A sportier camshaft and exhaust might unleash a little performance and be easy enough to do. Cylinder head work would also be an option.

Drive it and see how the carb works if it's ok then keep it, if it's playing up your old school tuning bloke my be able to help as most garages don't really know what they are doing with a carb.
If the carbs in a bad way get a Webber, takes about 1 hour to fit and any one with simple tools can set it up but still needs to be put on a co2 meter to check the mixture, you won't get any extra power from a Webber they just feel more responsive. I stuck a Webber on my Mk1 as the carb kept going wrong and after 3 attempts of fixing it and it was my only car so needed it for work. 10 years later I've not really had to do anything to the carb expect a little tuning every now and then.

Looking at the photos you posted in your other thread, you already have a Weber fitted. It's missing the vacuum reservoir, there's a bolt in the top of the air box attaching it instead of a clip and the raised bracket holding the front of the air box up is because the Weber is taller than the pierburg. :)

I pick it up Saturday so will check that out.

Yeah, you already have the weber installed, You can see from the allen bolt at the top of the airbox.

The only carb upgrade that will increase power would be twin 45s as far as i'm aware, but for the cost you're better off getting a camshaft with a longer cams.
