Scirocco Register

CV joint gone so I've been advised to swap the entire driveshaft with the one on my scrapper. Started on it yesterday but struggled with the 6 alan bolts at the gearbox. Someone then told me they were TORX or TX bolts (star-shaped) so I'm going to pick a set up now. Anyone else got any advice? It's passenger side by the way. Taking shaft off the scala to put on the GTII. Both G reg.

Only thing I can think of is undo the hub nut while the car is still on the ground with it's wheels on.

Use a breaker bar and then a four foot length of scaffold pole over the breaker bar - gives much more leverage and makes the job of undoing the hub nut a whole lot easier.

OK I've encountered a problem:

Undone everything fine with the hub nut and torx bolts and the drive shaft is loose. I've managed to slide it most of the way back off the hub, but the outermost rubber boot is catching on the anti-roll bar mount on the top of the wishbone. I can't undo this mount as the bolts holding it in place seem to be made entirely of rust, as do all the other bolts on the wishbone and suspension set-up.

Have you undone the 2 bolts at the bottom of the strut as this should allow you to lever the hub and wishbone down?

Managed it without the grinder in the end (gutted) but now my gears don't work right.
Gearstick's gone all limp and floppy, reverse gear has become a forward gear, think I heard some rumbling noises (not certain) and the car just doesn't feel right to drive at all. How can this have happened?

I changed the shaft on my GTII (with a knackered CV joint) for the one on my scrapper (scala injection). Everything seemed to fit back together fine, although when I was trying to re-fit the scrapper's shaft onto the GTII, somehow first gear had engaged, preventing the driveshaft from turning when I was replacing the 6 bolts. I disengaged first and returned it to neutral and it felt really loose but I assumed that was a result of the driveshaft being off so I ignored it.

Took it for a drive on completionof the job and quickly returned home gutted as everything had gone baggy and weird which was when I discovered reverse didn't work to add insult to injury, so I pushed the poor thing into it's space.

Can anyone help please?

Had a look at the gear linkages to make sure none of them have dislodged themselves?

Don't even know where to look. I'm rubbish with my mechanics knowledge. Only attempted this coz it looked easy! (and I couldn't wait a week for a mechanic to do it)

Where do I look and how can I tell if some are dislodged?

look down behind the mastercylinder all the rods and linkage are down there just get a hand in and see where all the movement is or if there is a rod pulled off

Excellent. One of the links had come off the ball joint. Must have knocked it with the driveshaft - it's just above it. Everything's back to normal now. Cheers everyone, especially roccodave for above and andyneedham2 who came over and helped me out.

not a prob fella glad to hear it is all sorted
may be time to replace them tho if they pop off too easily
