rebush the linkage

change fluid, correctly adjust the rear brakes, consider fitting braided hoses, remember you're not driving a new car

i'm assuming that the new friction components are in good condition and of good quality

Loads of kits on eBay. I took the play out of the ball on mine by ramming a short offcut of rubber coolant hose over it, as I couldn't find a replacement ball

Gear linkage kit looks like this,

Kit to change everything.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GEAR-SHIFT-RE ... 51c53e690f

kit to just change the bushes.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCIROCCO-GOLF ... 2ea0dbd922

There is a rubber ball fitted to a metal lever like the one in the link below (5 speed is different size but looks similar) which does the forward backwards moment check the rubber is still there

Link to break down of gear linkage, No 11 is the lever

Any idea how to adjust out a relunctance to select first?
All the others are fine, but first appears to have moved to the left a bit and I keep trying to set off in third!

You do have some adjustment at the gear stick end, pull up the gear stick gater and you will see 2 bolts losen them and you can slide the base plate for the gear stick over a little, move it to far and you will have difficulty with 5th.

You should not need to move the gear lever base plate. You should have a gap of 15mm (I think) between the bottom of the gear lever and the guide plate underneath the car. It sounds like you are a spline out at the front end of the gear lever shaft.
Haynes is quite good on setting up the linkage.

as regards the brake pedal going to the floor, the only time that usually happens is air in the system or someone pushed the caliper piston back when changing pads hadnt taken the cap off the brake fluid reservoir, which leads to damaged seals in the master cylinder = need a new master cylinder.
ive seen this happen many times, but is also the chance to upgrade it to the 22mm master cylinder from a 16v

Knackered wheel cylinders wheel also do this. In any car that's been laid up a while, replacing most of the braking system is an inevitable necessity.

The brake prob isn't mine, I just hiJacked a thread rather than start another.
Thanks for all your ideas and help, I have passed it to my man with spanners who sadly has diagnosed a broken, cracked or otherwise damaged baulk ring. Bum hats.
Anyone have a 4+E available to collect sharpish?

Man with spanners has revised his opinion and will be dismantling and rebuilding the linkage on Monday....
