Give the starter a couple of knocks with a heavy bit of wood or a hammer, just dont go mad.
Also check all the engine earthing points.

make sure the car is in neutral and the parking brake is firmly on.
there are 2 wires connected to the starter - a big chunky red one bolted on that goes straight to the battery and a smaller one (black and red if memory serves) connected with a spade terminal. remove the spade terminal one, then short the big red wire to the connector you just free'd off on the starter (make sense? my brain ain't working) this *should* make the engine crank over. if it does, then the switch (most likely) or the wiring is at fault. if it goes klunk or does nothing then the starter is having issues

I believe the term for this is 'Percussive Maintenance'

Sounds like starter motor - had that on my Mk3 1.6 Esc**t Ghi* a few years ago (before I got educated

).
Felt like a flat battery.
Cost me about £70 for a new starter motor.
If they go, they will drain the battery, because of the extra pressure on it to try and operate the starter.
It was while I was on holiday, camping in Norfolk. (Had to go to a F**d dealer).
Spoilt a night out, but I sorted it with the help of my wife (she loves all things mechanical).
Once we did a bit of a run, all was fine.
Cheers, hope this helps.

'Percussive Maintenance' is temporary.
