engine timing issues :/

Took it all apart and in my haste didn't check the marks I could see from someone befor...
Unfortunately they don't seem to do anything what so ever. .
Now I know what I need to do
Flywheel dimple at the top and tdc cylinder 1 then camshaft pulley outside dimple to line up with top of head then the mark on outside pulley of crankshaft needs to meet dimple on the intermediate shaft.. that's where trouble begins I have no marks at all on crank pulley it's an after market pulley with no marks what so ever had it where I though was right but pressure and fuel spilling up out of carb and nor starting please help someone. ...

Take #1 plug out. Poke a screwdriver down the whole and turn engine slowly. You will feel the piston rising. From memory, the dimple on the cam belt pulley that locates the aux belt pulley will be at 9 o'clock, but couldn't swear to it.
Line up mark on cam pulley
Pop dizzy cap off and line arm up with notch in rim of dizzy body.
It's a 50/50 shout if you get the bottom end 180 degrees out or spot on lol
Make sure you turn engine at least 2 full revolutions by hand before trying to start, to ensure nothing touches inside as it rotates, then recheck marks before starting

Speaking from personal experience, you can't necessarily trust the mark on the flywheel - mine has clearly been removed and replaced incorrectly at some point in the past, because the mark is nowhere to be seen when at TDC, and when lined up, the engine is nowhere near TDC.
As Nate says, use a screwdriver to find TDC.

Yeah I've got tdc and luckily it is with the flywheel. So using the dizzy to line the aux shaft and the little dimple to do the camshaft I should be there but somethings not right

Ok I'll bite.
What's not right?

Haha I dunno if I knew that it would be resolved lol....
Last night it was back pressuring through the inlet not the exhaust. I'm borrowing a bottom pulley later with the timing mark so will re asses the situation

Generally I ignore the mark on the intermediate shaft as you can rotate the dizzy to get static timing roughly right. Does the timing mark on the dizzy (small line on the casing in case you didn't know) line up with the center of the rotor arm when the engine is at tdc on cylinder 1?
It doesn't really matter where the intermediate shaft is as long as the dizzy mark lines up with the rotor arm, it should then fire and you can adjust the dizzy to get optimum timing with the advance till it pinks and then back off a bit method.

I had a passat with a 2E engine that I had a similar problem with. The cause was I had timed it up going by marks on pulleys. Previously someone had ballsed it up and rotates the dizzy by 180 degrees to sort it.
Also have a feeling the sprocket that drives the dizzy may have more than 1 mark on it, hence better to set with the notch on the dizzy body

It's a start though. Better than not running at all. Double check the plug leads are the right way round. Stupid I know, but the amount of times I've put 2 on wrong is unreal.
