How do you get 17" alloys to fit???

Hi, seen few pics of Rocco's with 17"alloys! I have a set and tried them,,, with sprigot rings and 10mm spacers they rub the inner sill plastic guard and with out the 10 mm spacers they rub the suspension! I have 215 45 17 tyres, would 205 40 17 make much difference?

The narrower tyres would help, but might not solve the problem completely. Try with 5 mm spacers instead of 10mm. Or take the arch liner out completely and clean inside the arch regularly.

I once had 17x7 wheels with 205-40R17 tire and they fit fine, but I don't remember the offset of those wheel. personally i think it's too large for the car

I agree, it just looks silly.
Was the steering heavy?
I don't get twatty big wheels and rubber band tyres at all, better on newstuffstraight from the factory but on a twenty five year old Scirocco,kt just looks like someone wants to be Carlos Fandango!

Or 5mm spacers?

Bear in mind that the car and its suspension were designed to run on 5.5 x 13 rims and 175/70 r13 tyres then later going up to 6.0x14 rims and 185/60r14 tyres and to be honest after owning 7 sciroccos they actually handle better on the 13's or 14's

They are just about okay on 6.5 x15 rims and 185/65 x 15 or at a push 195/50 x 15 tyres but anything bigger they will always suffer clearance problems and real world everyday handling issues.

I ran one of mine on OZ Volcane 7.0x16 rims and 215/45r16 tyres for a month or so but clearance was minimal and it handled like crap, tramlining and crashing on the suspension

As for 17" rims as you have said there are clearance problems , the only way to solve it will be leaving on the spacers and trimming back the wheel arch lips and the body kit to give clearance but it will not handle

Fitting bigger wheels is always trial and error. Factors mentioned above like width of wheel, offset and width of tyre are important.

What suspension you have is a major factor - at standard ride height you could probably fit 20" wheels in but the lower you go, the more issues you'll have with the arches.

Also, the wheels may rub on the suspension. Whereas most spring/strut combos will be the same diameter, coilovers might be narrower - but even then, different brandsof coilover differ in diameter.

Regarding tyres, two tyres from different manufacturers can have exact the same spec, e.g. 195/45/16 but one might have a rounder profile making it easier to fit under the arches.

You might also find that having your arches rolled helps - or with kitted cars folk have been known to remove metal from the arch altogether.

My Corrado before I bought it had been running on 17 " rims , the wheel arch lips had been cut back to about 3mm for clearance... at least they couldn't rust
