Scirocco Register

My rocco has a cork rocker cover gasket which I replaced last year but it has started to weep agian can the rubber gasket that is found on some roccos be fitted instead as an upgrade ?????

All mk1 & mk2 scirocco's had a cork gasket as standard so if you have seen one with a rubber gasket its non standard, the rubber gasket (mk3 golf) is an upgrade which works very well, just dont forget to make sure you get the correct studs with the kit as the originals will not allow the new gasket to sit right due to the shoulders on the studs

Both mine have the MK3 Golf gasket, no problems in the last 5 years! I bought mine from VW, so come complete with the correct studs to change.

I'm a stickler for originality on my car, so upgrades and mods are a no-no for me - has to be like for like with genuine parts....

....except for one upgrade: changing from the cork to the rubber rocker cover gasket.

I put a new rocker cover on my car a few years ago, so naturally went for the cork kit. Waste of time - replaced it twice over and it still leaked. Used the rubber kit with the taller studs from VW and had no problems at all.

Can never understand why VW were making the same engines for the Scirocco and Golf / Jetta, but the former got he cork and the latter the rubber gasket. Rubber definitely the way to go here!

Does the same apply for sump gasket? As I bought a new one which is cork.

Is this the same as the O.E one
Or has anyone got the part number for the 0.E one

The VW part number is 026 198 025C.

For the Scirocco, the opposite's true with the sump-pan gasket - it's a rubber gasket (like the upgraded rocker cover gasket), not cork. This was the original fitment.

The part number is 044 103 609D and is £28.85p from VW.

I also fitted the rubber sump seal and its been bone dry for the past 2 years

Yet another B&b Bargain

I got my sump gasket today! £9 from Vw heritage.
So next step is to do oil change and drop the sump at the same time.
Is it worth cleaning out the oil strainer while the sump is off?

Yes, and also the inside of the rocker cover, especially around the mesh. Worthwhile giving the rocker cover a blast of paint as well, smartens up the engine bay.
