Engine and gearbox swap

Post by ph91 »

Hi Guys

I am having a bit of trouble with my original 1.6 1985 engine and a post factory manual gearbox update. it seems at the moment every couple of days something else goes on it!

So the way i see it is i have only 2 options being a poor student :-D ;-) :

1 - sell up

2 - swap the engine and gearbox for something more modern

so my question is what engine and gearbox would fit a 1985 scirocco mk2 gt without any major cutting and mods?

Thanks guys!

Turns out it may not be as bad as first feared. may just be the clutch cable!!

I hope so anyway.

Does anyone have any tips on what else to check when it is getting replaced?

Thanks

Check the condition of the bulkhead where the clutch cable passes thru it. They are prone to splitting, which can lead to premature clutch failure, amongst other things. There is a self adhesive repair plate available. I would recommend fitting one even if yours hasn't split, as it will strengthen this know weak area and hopefully prevent future problems

Thought they were actually sold as mk1 golf. 99% they're all the same

GSF sell them, as Nate says they are sold for Mk1 Golfs and will require a bit of modification to fit, which amounts to a bit of bending and possibly a bit of cutting.
