hello, this will be my first post here. just picked up an 81 scirocco yesterday. It is currently getting fuel but no spark, the distributor and multiple other parts have been replaced. im leaning towards it being the knock control module, but im open to any suggestions. thanks guys!

Hello and welcome..
Might be more helpful if you let us know more about the car, 1981 was the change over year from Mk1 to Mk2, engine code or is it a 1.6 or 1.8, has the engine been changed, is the car fuel injection or carb, has the car been standing in a garge or barn for year or on the road?

i dont know what i was thinking, it is an 81.5 so its a mix of both. it has a full ecu harness and engine swap from an 87 scirocco. the po said he was driving and it just cut off and has yet to fire. it is getting fuel, but has no spark to the plugs. From my research I started testing today, the car came with a spare icm, knock control, and jetronics module. i swapped all of them just to check with no result, i then swapped the ignition switch out, again with no result. i cannot find a broken connection anywhere, and all the grounds have been checked and cleaned. i checked the power going into the coil and all is 12v, with no fire coming out of the coil. That leads me to believe the hall sender is bad or something broke within the distributor, as its highly unlikely 2 knock control modules are bad at the same time. so the next plan is to manually test the hall sensor and distributor. thanks for any input you guys may have

Did you get anywhere with this? (I don't come on her much, and have noticed a month's gone by!)

Sounds like you've got something "different" with that engine - (The "usual" UK scirocco 1.8i is a DX which is Kjet with NO ECU - there's the ignition module, just like on the carbed cars, but that's it.) ... Yours sounds like JH (Kjet with Lambda, ECU and a fuel pressure regulating valve on the metering head) which seem common in the USA but rare here (our mk1 cab has one - never knew they existed till the day after purchase!)

Anyhoo, if all the above twaddle sounds right to you, the ignition setup's independent from the ECU. The hall sender's in the distributor, and "isn't a replaceable item".. so that means a new dizzy .. No idea without checking on vagcat whether it's the same part as a DX or EX - it'd make sourcing one easier if it was though!

The ignition module's the same as DX and EX, so again, easy to source and swap.

Coils are easy too - pretty universal for old cars and cheap at motor factors.
