4/5 speed gear linkage differences?

I am trying to work out if this is a stupid question and I just havent engaged my brain properly yet!

I am going from 1.6 injected with 4 speed g/box in my mk1, to 2.0 16v engine, and was going to swap the box across too. My rocco still has a nice, tight gear change (only 90 odd thousand miles) with all the shift rod bushes good, where as the golf is as sloppy as anything. Do I have to use the 5speed linkage from the donor golf to get the 5 gears (i.e is it teh linkage that allows selection of 5th) or is it teh box that determines whether 5th is available and I can keep the rocco rods?

You need the 5 speed gear linkage to use the 5 speed gearbox.

If your taking it all out it would be a sin not to rebuild the gear linkage anyway. Kits are £4 from gsf

Yeah I will be doing, I already have a kit, but bush kits are never quite the silver bullet they promise to be - Every time I have ever rebuilt one it is not only play in teh bushes, but also in the actual brackets, rods etc that all add up to vagueness in teh gear change
