Hi just got my new scirocco last night and i am very pleased with it one thing that i need to do to it however is sort the suspension At the moment it has hottuning coilover suspension But it it far too low for me so i need to adjust it higher but i dont have the special spanners Is this something i can do with a couple of plumbers adjustable type thingys or do i need the proper tools for the job. Also any tips on making this job as painless and easy as possible would be ace many thanks guys

Use the proper C spanners. You can get them quite cheap on eBay.

Be very careful: If the adjustment uses alloy collars on the steel damper body, be aware that damp will probably have got in and as a reaction with the two metals will result in corrosion. I had one which I tried to adjust and the collars just disintegrated. I had to get a local engineer to make new ones (out of steel). In any case, lubricate well in advance and a little warming will help, but don't boil the oil in the dampers.

TAPPET NOISE
thought i might as well ask another question while i am here had the car in the garage 2 days and started it from cold for the first time today started fine revs about 2000rpm when cold gradually dropping to 800rpm when warm any way there was a definate loud tapping noise when warming up like something loose at the top of the engine at first it was constant then after a few mins it would stop suddenly then start again when fully warm it went completly am i right in thinking it has hydraulic tappets plus any opinions on if this could be an issue would be great also whats the correct procedure to start a 1.8 carb(pierburg) auto choke do i press the excellerator or leave it alone cheers jon

From your description it sounds like the tappets. They do tend to get sticky with age and made worse when oil changes are missed and get sludged up a bit. My Golf does it at random but it getting less frequent with 5K oil and filter changes plus some engine flush through each time.
Pierburg start up from memory is, leave the throttle alone and turn the key and it should sort everything out.

If you have the car's handbook it will say in there, it does for injection cars.
Agree with Tim, tappet noise is common on older VW's, so give the car an oil and filter change after a flush. VW sells Synta silver 10/40 oil at a reasonable cost.

Thanks for the info dan the previous owner has looked after the car and there are quite a few bills with it so it has been looked after but i think an oil and filter change should help spent a full day giving the car the autoglym treatment and i am very pleased with how it now looks

Look for evidence of the cambelt being changed, if not make it a priority.
How about a picture (or two) of your car?

Yeah will get some pictures soon , As i cant afford two run 2 cars i fancy spending time working on the rocco in the garage
think i may start a project thread as ive got to decide what to do about the high clutch pedal and worn synco on the gearbox
previous owner drove 40 thou miles with the box like it is but i suppose if i aint gonna use the car i may as well sort it any ideas on price for a second hand gearbox? Should i also try to get one with the same gearbox code anyway its on axel stand at the moment on the rear ready to check the dreaded fuel filler pipe tomorrow if it has gone i may try the rubber hose method ive read about on here as new metal ones are expensive and i dont have much cash thanks

Keep an eye open in the for sale section, gearboxes pop up from time to time or put a wanted ad up! Some bargains do turn up.
