Scirocco Register

Hi every one hope you are all well anyway after being without a scirocco for the grand total of 4 months ive only gone and bought another after all the trouble i had last time with running problems(found out is was down to a worn carb) i now have a corolla for a daily driver so i can garage the rocco and mess about with it(another term for me breaking it) at my leisure!!!!ha ha
My new rocco has been bought of a member on this forum its a 1987 scala which the previous owner has owned for 4 years and been using every day 155,000mls and long mot , the main problem with it is the gearbox it has a worn syncro in 1st and second the previous owner says its been like that since he has had it and he has driven 45,000mls in it
as i dont intend to use the car at the moment i was after opinions on wheather i should remove the box and fit another(clutch is quite high as well) or leave it alone any info on how big a job it is or maybe i am thinking of removing the engine as a whole and cleaning and tidying the engine bay as well as changing the box pretty good at car diy and i have a haynes just need some info or tips from anyone who has done this type of thing before

Gearbox can be changed in a few hours with little more than spanners jack and axle stands. Engine out is also doable but much easier with an engine hoist. Synchro isn't a major issue everything will still work fine but can be a bit awkward to get in gear without it.

Hijacking this thread slightly - if you can change the gearbox without a hoist, presumably that means the clutch can be changed without a hoist too... been dreading the clutch going, due to a) the expense and b) lack of trustworthy garages round my way and c) not knowing if it was diy-able without a hoist.

Only clutch I ever changed was on my Land Rover (remove transmission tunnel and floor in passenger compartment, support gearbox on jack, slide back, relatively straightforward).

yes, you can do a clutch on these on the driveway without an engine crane. just need to be a bit careful that the engine is adequately supported when you take the mounts off

As stated acouple of trolley jacks is easier, axle stands and the correct tools (before you start!).
A spare pair of hands also helps!

Thanks will have a good think about what i want to do before i start im not getting the car until later this week and am realy looking forward to having a good look round it The key thing about buying it is it has been used for the last 4 years as a daily driver so hopefully should be a reliable car Not going to use the car for at least 12 months so maybe i will just get stuck in and sort it It also has the original pierburg and as i had loads of problems with the last cars weber im defo going to keep it
Previous owner said he has even been round france in it How about a thread on the furthest or nicest destination any one has been too in there rocco

When was the gearbox oil last changed? might be worth sticking in some new oil and see if that helps.
