Scala fuel problem!!

Post by theconcierge-2007 »

Hi everyone

I have an '89 K-Jet Scala with a fuel feed problem. There is a whining noise coming from the 'fuel accumulator' (Haynes manual) located underneath the car drivers side rear. The car starts but when tried to accelerate it just dies.

Could this be the fuel pump or is it in the tank?

Please help

Theres also a pump in the fuel tank to lift the fuel out, (there about £12 from GSF car parts) so that could be at fault, when mine went the fuel pump under the car made a lot more noise and the car would not rev.

Could also be blockage in the filter by the lift pump from a rust in the fuel tank fuel from a rusty filler neck. Have you looked at the filler neck?

Just read your post again, There are two fuel pumps on a DX engine, one in the tank, one under the car, just infront of the rear beam thats the one that makes all the noise.

Yes that's the one, is this likely to need replacing? Presumably this is just the fuel pump and the other the lift pump?

I would check the lift pump first (in the tank), take the back seat out and then look under the cover, you should see the fuel tank two fuel pipes and an electrical connection. Take of the electrical plug then take of the fuel hoses (have a cloth handy as fuel will come out) you might also need two new fuel hose clips if no one has taken the fuel lines off before.

You will need to cross two long screwdrivers to undo the cover with the fuel pipes on it. DO NOT leaver of the fuel pipes there should be a lip on the cover to leaver from (I will try to find some photos if more helpful) there should be a fuel pump and a float to measure the fuel level on the cover. Remove the pump and fuel level sender then you can test the lift pump on a car battery to see if it works.

It might be better explained on the FAQ section on this site.

When you have the cover off it might be worth looking in the fuel tank (with a torch not a match!!) to see if there is any rust in there, I think most of us on here have put a magnet on a wire and picked up rust out of the tank then when you get all the rusty bits you can out of the tank just leave it in there to collect the rest!

By the time I've finished writting this and previewed it someone has posted the link

I had the exact same problem. Car was fine for short journeys but when it got hot the accumulator got real noisy and it cut out every minute or so. And it would drive fine if i pottered around on part throttle but when i put my foot down it stuttered and wouldnt go. Main fuel pump was new, and i put a good second hand accumulator in it and it was still at it. So i pulled out the lift pump and it was dead. New lift pump and no more problems

My GTX (1985 K-Jet DX engine) has starting problems - won't idle. Have now noticed that if I brake 'heavily' I get the same whining noise as described on the Scala. However, I do not have any issues with it being worse for long journeys, or cutting out if I floor her. Thought it might be the fuel pump (original as far as I know...) but will have to investigate further after reading this!

Wonder if it's linked to my starting problems - thought it was the AAV but maybe not......

Sorry to jump in on someone else's post - just amazed someone else describing the noise from my car! :shocking:

Hi, sorry it's taken so long to come back to you guys, weather, work, family, etc.!!!

It was indeed the lift pump, replaced with item from GSF at £26 not original but works non the less. I'm sure some of you true dubbers are disgusted!!!!

A big thank you to all that offered advice and assistance.
