Distributor cap

Has anyone ever experienced a distributor cap failure, where the cap looks normal and intact but there is a loss of continuity between the centre HT connector and the sprung carbon pin that connects it to the centre of the rotor arm? I ask because it's the one thing I haven't checked while trying to trace my no spark problem...

easy. connect a plug to the end of the king lead and crank it to see if you get a spark. if there is a spark, try another dizzy cap and arm

ive had a dizzy cap fail for no obvious reason. changed it and hey presto its alive again.
ive also had a rotor burn out, the tracking over the top of the rotor had disintegrated and come away hence no more spark at the plugs.
absolutely no idea what causes this though?
inferior aftermarket parts?
