Good news, a nice easy fix. Folk often overlook the basics!

If it's a carb car This can also be caused by broken or loose engine bay wiring going to a carburettor.
As I had this happen to my car a few years ago on the pooberg carb.
Another reason why I ditched it

as i said theres a vacuum control valve on the carb thats operated by a circuit that also heats the hedghog in the manifold, a heater element on the front of the carb and then to this solinoid thing.
if i disconected the solinoid the car used to rev up to about 3000rpm because no vacuum could reach the throttle actuator.
the reason for this is too little vacuum makes the actuater on the throttle push the throttle open more than it should at idle.
the reason it does this is at startup the throttle is opened by this actuator untill vacuum builds, then actuator moves off the throttle thus creating an idle speed.
when you switch on electrical loads the engine revs drop slightly and the vacuum drops aswell, this drop in vacuum makes the actuator move and pushes the throttle open to regain the correct idle speed.
to be fair the pooberg carb is a nifty bit of kit, its a shame its a pig to set up properly, or i would put it back on the car instead of the weber.
