There's a bloke down the pub...

...who owns a mk 2 Golf with the same 75hp 1600 engine and 4+E gearbox as my Scirocco GT.
However, he claims that it will do 130mph and 'still pulling like a train'
Yet all he's done is to fit 'the cam from a Gti'
I assume that this is the fellow from an 1800 injection.
But is he talking from between the cheeks of his buttocks?
Does a cam on its own make that much difference?
What happens to the mountains of low down torque that I've grown used to
And will it do anything to the gallon?
Thanks.

130 mph! Oh really, does this bloke associate with a well known ex CO-OP banker!!!
The book speed of a MK2 Golf GTi is only 118 mph from 112 bhp!
Maybe he has it chipped!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just so happens I have a 1.6 GT with a 1.8 GTI cam.
It's good for about 110 downhill with the wind behind it.

Perhaps his speedo reading is WAY OUT ?
Different wheels fitted to the car?

Can I ask you whether you're happy with the change?
Is it as driveable, as relaxed, as torquey, as economical?
Or have you turned it into a peaky, revvy little blighter
Where all the gear ratios feel wrong for the power band?
What does it really do to the gallon?

GTI 8v doesn't run some mental wild cam as standard so it won't make a carb model run lumpy or like a honda 16v where you have to rev the nuts off it.
With a very long hill you an get a Mk2 1.6 to read off the 120mph clocks ... but it has to be a VERY long hill

I can get mine to see 135 ish on the clocks*. It's a 1.8 with a 285 degree cam rejetted weber and stainless exhaust. I also have lower profile tires so I know that its over reading. At that point it is still gradually accelerating but certainly not 'pulling like a train'
*on private roads of course.

And if you put gti clocks into a 1.6 that originally didn't even have a rev counter than you will get it to read way over as the origenal clocks only went up to 120 mph hence why there is three different coloured gear spindles on the speedo cable end that goes into the gearbox, depending on your spec. This is what your suppose to change as well as the clocks!
I put 140mph gti clocks in my golf and it read 120 mph when I was actually doing 90 flat out, even my sat nav was telling me it was optimistic.
At least if you stick to the legal limit you will never get caught!

Exaggeration + bar horse power + misreading speedo.
Its not uncommon to find an old VW that says it has a 1.6 that's had a cheeky 1800 fitted as they're indistinguishable to the untrained eye. Says the voice of experience.
It won't pull like a train at one thirty, but i'm told you can at least see the needle get up there.

Did you know a Porsche engine fits straight in the back of a VW Beetle? Only 4 bolts.....
