Scirocco Register

After four and a half years without a Rocco I have landed arguably my most ideal Mk2 – a totally original diamond silver 1.6 GTI. Ordered on 31 August 1982 and first registered on 2 September (so it's nine months older than me!) to a Ms Griffin who worked in Brussels but had the car registered in England, it was then owned from 2003 by Alex (whose son is andrewz105 on the forum) who kept it in the garage and hardly ever drove it at all. Thanks to an upward swing in my personal finances I found myself in a position to buy it.

Only joking. It is being kept totally standard, as Alex kept it before me. It is a very rare beast in, (considering its age) really very good and absolutely original condition. All that's getting done is:

Welding and painting where necessary – courtesy of Ant aka the Autoad. The rear arches aren't great, but I’ve seen much worse. There is also some rust on the rear valance that has caused the underseal to peel off.
a thorough service including the cambelt
a new clutch...like nomadic fisherman, there's too much travel and I wonder when I'm going to get a bite
it needs the fuel filler neck repositioned and the new rubber fitted.
paint machine polished
fit the seatbelts to the rear
original spec stereo from somewhere – although since these didn't actually come with stereos my 'standard only' criterion can relax. I might get a 'period' one but with an auxiliary output for my iPod.
Fuel pump sounds like a kazoo – that needs changed pronto – for my sanity as much as anything else!

The car has the following phase one GTI spec:
split parcel shelf
no MFA as it's the 1.6
no sunroof
scirocco script on tailgate
proper GTI US-spec headlights
'tarantula' wheels
original interior
nifty little fader for the speakers mounted on the dashboard
oil temperature meter on the centre console
gearchange economy light and MPG indicator

Condition
only has 74k on the clock
full service history and bill of sale
rust on rear valance and rear arches. Slight patches of rust elsewhere, mostly surface. I suspect the car has had a bad respray in the past as the paint on the roof looks very flat and feels rough to the touch. In addition there is some touch up paint overbrushing on the door handles. Overall doesn't detract from the car and I don't care that much as it will be going for work anyway.

engine pulls nicely up through the gears with no stuttering or hesitation.

I intend to drive this as my daily driver, as my other mk2 was before. I am in no doubt that several more niggles will raise their 31 year-old heads during my ownership, but given my current mileage of about 10000 a year it'll be another two and a half years before it even cracks the ton. I have never driven an EG-engined car before.

Does anyone know how you get the certificate from VW that tells you when your car was built?

into this. Pretty crap job really, but it'll do for the mean time until i get access to masking tape etc!

for painting the letters on the badges, try and get hold of a firm rubber roller. use it to roll paint onto the badge. i did it on my cousin's mk1 golf about 20 years ago, and it worked really well. can't remember where we got the roller from thought

Or an even easier way (how I did the Karmann bages on my Storm) is to use a paint pen that most arty type shops sell, no need to mask up or chance of drips/runs!

my boot lock seal is like powder, which probably explains the water in the boot.

seal arrived the other day, good stuff. went to undo the 31 year old screws holding the lock mechanism in place and...crunch...rounded one of them off. God himself couldn't turn those b**tard things. i got one of them undone eventually, but the other one will need drilled out and replaced.

not a happy man (PS i don't have a drill, hence my ire)

I did exactly the same last week, though managed to Dremel a slot into the screw, then used a flat bladed driver with a hex bolster attached to a spanner (and a liberal amount of penetrating fluid) to get it out!

went out today to investigate my rear seatbelts, or lack thereof. When I bought the car the previous owner told me that he had bought some lapbelts but never got round to fitting them.

Given what Ian had told me about all German cars after 1979 being fitted with rear belts, i must admit i lifted the rear bench, expecting to find the original intertia reel belts tucked away under the seat. Well, all I can say is "Alex, sorry, for doubting you" as they were definitely not there. In fact, what was there were four blanking screws for each belt and its corresponding buckle. Very odd. I can only assume the car's status as a special Belgian RHD order has something to do with this.

so that means that the lap belts that came loose with the car wouldn't have fitted anyway - as they use a centrally-mounted twin buckle. they were obviously taken from a post-84 car. so they're up for sale. and i still need some proper 82 spec ones. here they are:



However, i had my first piece of good luck when i lifted the rear bench - for whatever reason there were a few tiny offcuts of seat material under there, in fact juuuuust enough to repair the worn bolsters on my drivers' seat. so i washed the gunk and fluff off them, and here they are drying on the radiator, ready for whenever funds allow and i can get someone who knows what they're doing to effect a repair for me.



mind you, that is a very, very long way down the list. i need to get the car to start regularly, first off....

Rick, give me shout when you need the seat doing, I know a trimmer in Harlow, not expensive either.

That's a very pretty car and I'm glad to hear you're keeping it original.
