Scirocco Register

The time has come for me to start looking at fixing my scirocco after getting annoyed with it and ignoring it.

My problem is there is a loud knock everytime the car changes direction. Its fine on acceleration and braking and during cornering, just on weight transfer left/right. You can also feel the knock through the steering wheel, almost as if the whole car has a pendulum in it.

The cars had new wishbones/underbody brace etc and ive checked the torques on arb's etc. The clutch was done just before the knocking started so im asuming engine mounts from the symptoms? The engine seems pretty solid in its position however...

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

Engine mounts would normally be felt on acceleration & deceleration. Try putting your foot down and then backing off the throttle completely.
From what you've described I would check the steering rack and mounts. Track rod ends. And I know it sounds stupid/obvious but wheel nuts and hub nuts if you had them off when doing the clutch.

Wishbone ball joints are my favourite.

Ive checked the wheel bolts, will check the hub nuts. Ive also had new ball joints on the wishbones done less than 500 miles ago, i didnt do the track rod ends so maybe ill do them too while im working on it.

I did have knocking on acceleration and decleration just after the clutch, the engine mount was adjusted as it was set too close to my lower brace bar. Theres no more knocking on acceleration and decleration now, even when trying to 'kangaroo' it if you know what i mean.

Ill have a good look around the steering rack, can you get to it all without removing the engine?

Just a few ideas for you to look at.

Engine mounts allowing side to side movement?
ARB bushes tired? If you have done wishbones then i presume that the clamps and outer bushes looked ok, How about the inners on the wishbone rear mounts?
Hub to suspension strut bolts torqued up correctly?
The screw on cap holding the damper insert into the strut tight? (I've had one come loose before and clunk as the damper moved in the housing)

All of my bushes are polybush at the front and are all new including all arb bushes. I checked all of the front suspension torque figures last time i took it out but ill do them again, im sure this car can cause itself problems sitting idle!

Im not sure what you mean by the bottom suggestion, my car has coilovers, so i dont know if its the same on these?

Im making a list atm to get cracking on the car with all the suggestions mentioned, thanks to all that replied, fingers crossed i can get it fixed and actually use it again (albeit just in time to go back under cover for winter)

Ok, my last suggestion would only apply if you had the standard struts.
