K&N air filters

I have a Weber carb on my 1986 GTS with a panel K&N air filter (fitted in the standard place). I have noticed there are bolt on K&N air filters too (so presumably you remove all of the kit associated with the panel). Is there a difference in performance between the two?

There are different thoughts on this. The bolt-on filter probably has the capacity to flow more air, but as it is in the engine bay, all the air it gets will be hot, and therefore less dense. The panel filter has the benfit of using the standard cold air feed from the OEM airbox, which should give it cold air. I reckon the panel filter is better, it means you can use the warm air feed from the exhaust manifold which makes slow running easier in the winter.
