Affordable performance upgrades?

Post by Niall »

After my daily mk2 breezed through it's MOT yesterday with no advisories (thanks to LEEP for maintaining the hell out of it)
I've decided to look into a performance upgrade. I can't go down the turbo/engine swap route as my insurance won't allow it, so I'm looking at an induction kit / upgrade of some sort.

I've seen a few people with the bolt on filters sitting on the carb. Just wondering if that actually helps performance or is it just for show.
Any ideas or suggestions are great, I'm budgeting about £200 if possible.

Car specs:
1.6 GT
Single Weber 32/34
1.8 GTI camshaft
Full stainless steel exhaust

You'll get little to no improvement from changing the air filter. And many "performance" induction kits will actually reduce power.

How about a decent manifold?

Already done. LEEP did that before he sold it to me.

For your budget I think you're pretty much at the limit.
Gearshift repair kit, tsr linkage and short shift would liven things up a bit though. Used the repair kit on mine (so simple even I could do it and is all the bungs and stuff) and it made the gear change really sharp

Already rocking the short shift and a relatively new gearbox.
Thanks for the input though

Lose weight ? Strip out everything you don't need - particularly the rear seats, parcel shelf, and obviously don't carry loads of junk about in the back.

Any idea what the law is on removing rear seats? Isn't there something about having to remove seatbelts as well?

What is the current output of your 1.6 engine?

I have had one of these up to 102 bhp and 100 lbft

£200 budget?

Shorter gearing? 4.25 final drive would liven it up

Skim the head - more compression may help the output

GTI 8v head ?

It's fine, I did it for years. Just remember to tell your insurance company

I run with no rear seats or seatbelts - it's not difficult to remove the seatbelts, they were only lap straps in mine anyway. Why lug around what is effectively a 2 seater sofa if you don't need it ? Never even been mentioned at an mot so I can't see it's a problem ?

They weren't a legal requirement to be fitted when the car was new. I don't know if they were standard for or optional extra though. I just ditched the rear seat altogether on my last mk2. Its not like people can fit in the back anyway

Rear seat belts were standard on all German cars built from 1979.
