engine number

just aquired myself a late mk2 golf gti lump. where abouts on the block will i find the engine number? i've searched and i can't find it. don't know the engine code either

It'll be a PB, think the engine number should be on the front of the block somewhere near the alternator. My haynes comic doesn't tell me so I'll have to go have a look.

allways thought it was on a flat bit on the block just behind the dizzy may be wrong for a pb but its where ive found mine in the past on ex and agg blocks just rub it with a bit of sandpaper makes it much easier to read
hope you find it there somewhere if not no clue where else to look
