My clutch is crazy stiff I originally thought was just as was cable not hydraulic but after driving my mates.. something is definately wrong with mine, the cable seems to pull through ok, has had a repair panel not the best but does its job, I think its the lever mechanism on end of gear box, I cant pull it with 2 fingers on it and I mean really pulling on it!! Should I be able to? And how do I fix this? Chris

Could just be the clutch itself. Assuming it isn't snapping clutch cables daily, I'd just have an extra weetabix

My Mk1 scirocco clutch is so much lighter than the Golf but the Scirocco has a newer clutch (fitted 30,000 miles ago) the Golf has the original clutch so its 25 years old! it could be your clutch is getting old, do you know if it was replace and when?

There should be a little bit of free play on the gearbox lever arm just against its spring which should be easy to move. Lifting the arm up by hand against the clutch itself, no chance. But check the routing of the cable, make sure it's not sawing into the gearbox casing where it passes through the hole above the clutch lever arm and look at the other end where its routed to go around the cam belt, I've had a cable wear though the metal guide there and get very heavy/jam.

I tend to lubricate my cable with silicon spray lubricant whenever i notice it getting heavier, disconnect it at the gearbox end, hold it up in the air and spray down the inside of the outer sheath, so it can run all the way along. Makes a huge difference!

Routing of cable is spot on and not catching anything... shes on 107k and had no clutch from new that I can see... so you guys wreckon its the clutch? Not the arm its self thats stiff... hmmm ill try lubing cable up. If im taking gearbox out... shes getting a lightened flywheel in there! Made massive difference on my old kr motor...

My Storm has had a repair plate in the past, and the clutch pedal has always been very stiff. Could be the alignment of said plate?
