Anybody know what the black sealant is which is plastered around my rear lights and under the black plastic number plate backing plate? I have taken the backing plate off to preserve behind and it was stuck on with black double sided tape and big blobs of the black sealant around the locating holes into the boot. I want to put it back the same but don't know where to get the sealant or double sided tape from. Anybody help out?
Rob

Hi Rob,
Most likely to be Tiger seal for the blobs and most Vw places or good motor factors stock the two sided tape.
I have only about 100mm left as I used it when I vinyled my back end a couple of weeks ago.
Not enough to do the job or I would have sent it down.
(smilies not working)
PS Don't know why it is plastered round your back lights ??????????

VW dealers sell the black sealant, they call it cord and the part number begins with AKD. Sorry at work and don't have access to the full part number.

Definately don't think it is Tiger seal as the stuff that was on there was still flexible and was able to be picked off and rolled up like a snot, (not that I do such a thing!!). I think Tiger seal sets hard and is difficult to remove.

The VW stuff doesn't harden, good stuff! The dealers used it around the lights to stop leaks, if you lift your carpets you will probably find it there also!

Cheers Ian, hopefully Sean can come up with a part No. The sealant was just around the plastic gromits and fixings where the black plastic backing plate is attached to the boot, probably to seal against the rain getting in. (Another area to check for those with wet rear carpets eh?!)

Thanks Kris, Interestingly I just looked it up myself on VAGCAT during my boring nightshift but came up with the number AKD476KD505 so not sure which one is correct.

This stuff is otherwise known as butyl tape. Widely available on eBay in various lengths and thicknesses. As Ian says, also used to secure carpet, door liners, soundproofing. I also used small pieces at the outer corners of the windscreen seal to improve fit, properly seal up holes in the bulkhead around cables, improve seal around rear lights. Etc. Versatile stuff.

I have just bought 10m of fender seal (AKD-497-010-04-R10) and had it imported from the states. Attempting to fix my rear brake lights from leaking.
Does anyone know whether it goes on top of the existing rubber seal which is not sticky and goes all the way around the outside of the rear brake lights? Or should this seal be used instead of it?
Thanks!
