Scirocco Register

When I bought my rocco the speedo cable had broken. so i ordered a new one and threw the old one away (d'oh!)
ive installed the new one with difficulty (didnt seem to want to go in) and it wasnt working so i pulled it out and the red plastic gear on the gearbox end is a bit mangled so im guessing its the wrong end?
on ebay there seems to be a few types (15 teeth and 16 teeth)
one listing says "5 speed only" but doesnt specify tooth number :/

so...
my question to you lovely lot is...
what speedo gear do i need for a 4 speed box?

I have a complete 4 speed box going, if its of interest? Don't know how urgent you need this sorting, but I'm not gonna be at hike fir the next 10 days or so

The gear for a MK2 injection is red in colour, and still available from the dealers.
Why not give your local dealer a call, you may be surprised and the cost last time I bought on (last year) was about 3 quid.

It all depends on your gearbox code and the number of teeth on the final drive, as to whether you need a clear (white), red or green speedo drive gear. They all have a different number of teeth.

from trawling the internet ive found out that its red for 5 speed, white for 4 speed and green for either diesel or autos (ive forgotten which) still waiting for mine to arrive

Sorry to poach the thread, but i have the same problem. Fitting a 83/84 i think GTI box to a GTX. It had diffrerent flange sizes and reverse light connections on the top. will the speedo drive gear still be the same? doesn't seem to want to go in...

Post your gearbox code and when I can get to my manuals, I'll check for you.

This page might help: http://www.mk1vw.info/modules.php?name= ... wtut&id=11 If you look up your transmission code on the bottom of the transmission, you can see what Ring and Pinion / final drive ratio you have, and therefore which speedometer gear you need.

Red - 15 teeth - fits Final Drive ratios 3.65 - 3.67

White (Clear) - 16 teeth - fits Final Drive ratios 3.89 - 3.94

Green - 17 teeth - fits Final Drive ratio 4.25

Managed to check my boxes, previous was ACD with final drive 3.67, new is a 7G with 3.65. The metal 'bung' that goes into the top of the gearbox seemed slightly too large (probably less that 1/10th of a mm) so i sanded it lightly, and it now fits the hole at the top, but still doesn't go right town. feels like it needs to go down another 2-3mm. Should the black plastic part sit under or over the metal plate that the bolt goes through?
I think putting the bolt in and just tightening it down would force it in, but i don't want to break anything down there.
Really not helping that the person who took this bit apart isnt the same as who's now putting it back together!

EDIT: Fixed with a hammer lol, Driving the Rocco for the first time in 6 months, WooHoo!
