Hi,

Just got back from a 400 mile round trip to visit my mum in Donegal, Ireland from Liverpool. Was looking forward to it but it didn't go that well. Car was all over the place really, not handling the road or the odd bump so think it's time to treat it to a new set of shocks and springs. God knows when they were last changed.

Want to keep it standard spec but want quality parts.

Believe Bilstein are good with Eibach springs? Don't want to lower it though.

Any advise appreciated???

What size are standard springs also ???

Look at what you can get from VW Heritage and GSF/ECP. The all usually have good quality stuff like Bilstein - the gas shocks are meant to be better.

With those kind of handling problems it would be worth getting the suspension geometry checked properly and also looking at the bushes for suspension and steering rack - they might be quite old and dried up by now. New, OEM bushes will be a great improvement if you're interested in original-style ride comfort. I wouldn't go for polyurethane unless you're after track-car firmness.

Think Ianaudia4 has just gone for a fairly standard set up that he rates pretty highly. Might be worth asking him.
Ed's bang on though, probably time t change the bushes as well.

On my Storm I have Eibach springs and Bilstein B4, which are OE spec gas filled shocks. It does lower it but only about 30mm, it is a very comfortable ride, as good as my Scala with standard shocks and springs.

As Ed says worth changings bushes at the same time as well as top mounts.

thanks for replies,

Didn't really want to lower it but i dont think Eibach do standard springs so may have to sacrifice a little lowering, any ideas on cost for the Eibach Bilstein combo front and rear?

I was lucky in that I bought some new Bilsteins at a show earlier in the year, the Eibach springs cost me £146, which was the cheapest around as I asked for a discount from Revolution in Gateshead, usual price was around the £160 mark.

This company seem to come up cheapest for the shocks but I have never used them:
