Hi,

Thought the mileometer was fine then suddenly stopped working a few days ago. Then the next day it started working again. After monitoring it for a few days, I have noticed it only likes to measure the journeys it feels like doing! The speedo needle is working fine the whole time. Is this likely to be the gear inside the gauge not catching all the time? Is it easily fixed?

I have a simular problem but mine works if I restest the trip then it will work to 0.9 miles (on the trip reading) and stop, sometimes it will get to 9.9 miles and other times you can drive 19.9 miles before it stop.

I took the dash out at the weekend and noticed a clog at the back had a little bit missing so I've changed that as I had a spare speedo but I've not had change to drive the car yet to see if it worked, been rather wet down in Somerset......

Do you have to take the whole dash out to get the clocks out? Or can you do it from just removing the bezel/binnacle?

Isn't there a faq on how to fix this?

No there isn't. Anyway, I checked the cogs when I had the clocks out to change the voltage regulator. They were fine but the speedo cable didn't seem to be screwed in as tight as it could/should be. After putting it back together with the cable nice and tight, my mileometer has worked as it should on 4 separate journeys now! Could be another accidental fix! Very happy if it is.

This is not fixed as I first thought, doh! The cogs seem to be all present and intact, anything else to look for?

the plastic gear on the end of the odometer slips on the shaft. take out the unit, glue the gear or stake the end of the shaft to fix it in place again.

After some searching i think Ive found the problem and think Ive fixed it.
As I said before my mileometer will get to 0.9 miles and stop or some times 9.9 miles and stop, most of the time it would stop at 0.9 miles and I'll have to reset the trip to get it moving again as it would also stop the main mileometer working. After driving back from the nationals and having to reset the trip 160 times it was time I fixed it!

There seems to be 2 possible causes
1 the white or some times red cog at the end can slip on the shaft or get cracked, I tried to super glue the cog on the shaft then put a mark on the shaft of check it the cog did spin around on the shaft, I put a drill on the end and looked what happened it was not moving/slipping on the shaft so that was fixed got the mileometer to 0.9 and it miles stopped! the white cog was going round not slipping so it was something else.


2 There is a metal gear next to the white cog just in side the main mileometer (see picture) and I found I could turn this round and move the miles forward or backwards with my finger I read I should not be able to do this.
To get this cog out its a little bit tricky, needle off the speedo, face off, remove the 3 screws under the face and take the back casing off the speedo. Push the metal bar/shaft (one with the white/red cog, metal cog and all the numbers for the mileage) make a note of your milage as if like me the bar was a pain to push/pull out then suddenly it came out dropping all the cogs and miles cogs on the floor.... After putting the metal cog back on the shaft while it was out of the speedo it was spinning around and was lose so I poured a little super glue in the centre of the cog then let it set for about 30 mins while, I put the mile cogs back on this is tricky as you have to line them up and make sure they turn over at the right time etc, took me a bit of time to work out how to set them up if you can only pull the shaft out a little to remove the metal cog that as its alot easier then setting the mile cogs.
I then placed the metal cog back on the end and pushed the metal shaft back in, I had to tap it with a hammer to push it through the set super glue, I then glued the white cog back on and put the speedo back together Ive got to check the speed is right with the sat nav to make sure I put the needle back on right.



Ill try it later today and hope its fixed after spending 3 hours on this last night! I'll let you know.

It works!!

I had to drive around today just to make sure, 50 miles later it still works.
So after taking the speedo apart and all the messing about it was worth it.

If your mileometer is not moving at all its the red/white cog at the end (easy fix) super glue it on.
If like me it stops at 0.9 etc its the metal cog (right pain to fix)....
