MK1 Storm temp and fuel gauge problem

Hi,
These gauges aren't working for me, the temp one just constantly flashing at me with no needle movement, while the fuel gauge only goes up to the top of the red mark even when full. I have heard that this could be a faulty voltage regulator which also affects the later square clocks found in a mk1 Golf etc. Does anyone know if they are the same part as I have a spare one of those to test with? Could it be anything else?
Thanks
Sanjay

Take your clocks out and check the plug, it could be loose or need cleaning. Some MK1 (and MK2) Golf clocks fit, the ones with two plugs. If your car is a GTi or Storm with the gear shift indicator then a MK1 Golf GTi clocks are slightly different in their layout.

Mine is a Storm, but doesn't have the shift indicator. But what I meant was is the 3 pin voltage regulator the same on both the round clocks as well as the later square ones? If not, does anyone know where I can get one for the round clock type? I'd rather have one ready once I pull the dash off to check it all rather than have to do it all again if the connector cleaning thing doesn't work.

If you don't have the gear-shift indicator, it's quite possible they aren't the original clocks, which may explain the problem. You might be able to find a suitable set of clocks to try and see if that cures the problem. To the best of my knowledge, all Storms had the gear shift indicator type of early instrument cluster.

Mine is an early Storm, but I don't see where the shift indicator would be on the round clocks? I know on later mk1 Golfs with square clocks, they have them in the mpg meter.

Yes, the gear shift indicator should be in the MPG meter, do you have the meter on your clocks? All Storms (and GTi's, GL's, CL's and early GTX's) had the gearshift indicator from 1982 until about 1985.
Do you have a picture?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Mine is a mk1 Storm with round clocks. I'm wondering whether the voltage regulator from the mk2 square clocks is the same?

I'm sure one of the MK1 boys will be able to help, I haven't had a MK1 for 25 years!
PeteGLi has a MK1 with MK2 clocks, he may be a good source of advice.
I have edited your post to say MK1.

Yes. The voltage regulator is the same. And no, the Mk1 would not have had a gear shift indicator.
Have a look in the FAQ's (link in the pink rectangle at the top of this page) for a test procedure for the gauges.

So happy! I bought a set of clocks a while back as I needed a speedo for my mk1 Golf as its a bit dodgey (still haven't got round to changing this). I nicked the voltage regulator off them and swapped the Scirocco one and now the gauges work! Fixing a fault is brilliant, but having the spare part lying around by complete fluke just makes it better! Thanks for the help.
