Fingers on buzzers who can tell me if when you convert a 4 speed manual linkage to 5 speed you need to change more than just the rods in the engine bay??

I havent adjusted the linkage yet, but i cant seem to get anything other than neutral and even that doesnt feel right

The cover plate (the but that creates the reverse lockout) is a different part. Giving you more side to side range on the lever.
I only discovered this recently and ive been running my ex 4 speed around with the naff gearchange since I swapped it years ago!

VW Part number is 171711261C
Obsolete from VW and nothing at Classic Parts.

Same part on 5 speed cabrios and Corrados up to 93 though so shouldnt be too hard to find.

Although, if you set the linkage - 15mm from the reverse lockout plate to the "finger" on the bottom of the gear stick, with the finger centred front to rear on the lockout plate - you should still be able to get the gears. It doesnt feel "right" though
