What's the best oil to chuck in, considering I'm at a shell garage?

totally clueless about oil, I admit, and I've got two toddlers asleep in the back, so don't need late night dramas :~/

TIA.

If the lights on anything will do as you are only adding a bit, 5w30 is a thiner oil.

Diesel oil usally has more cleaners put in it
to quote from ebay" Shell Helix Diesel HX7 10W-40 has special active cleansing technology. Twice as effective at removing sludge from dirty engines than a normal mineral oil. "

You really need petrol oil, any 20w40 there?
Or even 15w40?

Could be a faulty sensor? there is one on the side of the head and there might be one on top of the oil filter, check the spade connector is on ok, if a buzzer sounds when driving above 2000rpm the your oil pump is on the way out as there is low oil pressure or again a faulty sensor. If the light is just flashing and the levels are OK just take it steady and see if you get home.

Have you tried to start the car again to see if the light has gone out?

Hiya, thanks for your help mate - i got home just now. I stuck to 65 all the way home for an hour, and had no repeats. I can handle drama at 10am, or when others are with me, but when its just me and my two toddlers at 10pm, a buzzer sounds *mighty* loud.

It buzzed for 15 seconds, then off for 30 seconds, then another 15 seconds of buzzing. It freaked me right out, I can tell you. In over 20 years of motoring, ive never had an oil light come on. Im always good with my levels.

I guess ill iust have to keep an eye on it, next few days...

As the buzzer went off a couple of time it means either the pump is going or there is a blockage in the pick up, the buzzer is for low oil pressure. If it goes off again pull over and stop the engine, wait a couple of minutes and start it again. If it does not stop dont drive the car as oil is not getting pump around the engine. It is something that will need looking into soon. To get to the pump you have to take the sump off, not much of a problem expect there is a couple of bolts near the gearbox which are hard to get to, you need a thin socket to undo them. You will need a new sump gasket as well.

Oil pump (check I've got the right one)

Glad you made it home, its always a worry breaking down with the little ones board.

Well, I just drove 2 hours from Central Beds. to Suffolk with no alarms, so hopefully hopefully hopefully it was just 'one of those things'. But I will deffo keep an eye on it.Thanks for all the advice people, I might just take a look at the pump when I get back from holiday....
